Not to mention a fair amount of Cap space. Should be some big names available this summer with the lower salary cap. I wonder how it'll play out!Originally posted by spikers

We got UFA's Timmy Thomas, Theodore, Chris Mason, Garon, Labarbera, Emery... The world's your oyster!

Theodore - Possibly still broken
Mason - As a starter? Uh no.
Garon - Looked decent last year. I suspect TB will re-sign him.
Labarbera - Really? A backup goalie in his mid-30s?
Emery - He won't be leaving the Hawks after going 17-1 this year.
At the end of the day I think the Flames are just going to have to bite the bullet and accept that the next couple years are going to be for rebuilding from the ground up.
That means young goalies, young top prospects, short term contract older players and a couple losing seasons. Trying to build a winning team with cheap players over the age of 30 and waiver signings doesn't exactly seem like a good strategy to me given their current state.
Consider the Pens from 2002-2006. I think the Flames are in the same place right now.

What he said. Build a dynasty and work your way up again. Also, age shouldn't play a big factor:Originally posted by sputnik

Age definitely plays a factor. Especially in terms of the average age of the team.Originally posted by flipstah

While some veterans are needed to mentor the younger players, you shouldn't be expected to be able to build a solid top line where all of the players are over 30. The good players that are over 30 are sticking with their respective teams or will be WAY overpriced on the free-agent/trade market. However with a lower salary cap the FA/trade market should be kind of interesting this year.
ummm, are you forgetting Detroit though the mid 00's?Originally posted by sputnik

2002: 30.85 - Won the Cup
2003: 30.44 - Swept in 1st round (NJD: 29.14)
2004: 30.97 - Lost in 2nd round (TBL: 27.92)
2006: 31.76 - Lost in 1st round (CAR: 28.39)
2007: 29.97 - Lost in 3rd round (ANA: 28.19)

2010: 30.67 - Lost in 2nd round (CHI: 26.89)
2011: 30.81 - Lost in 2nd round (BOS: 27.68)
2012: 29.62 - Lost in 1st round (LAK: 26.97)
2013: 28.21 - Lost in 2nd round (CHI: 27.85)
There is a difference in HAVING a team with 30 year olds versus building a team with available 30 year olds.Originally posted by spikers

Look at the 01/02 roster for the Red Wings. Most of their older players had been with the team for several years, if not nearly their entire career. These are players that were developed by the organization from their teens and early 20s.
- Lidstrom
- Yzerman
- Fedorov
- Larionov
- Holmstrom
- Draper
Then add in a couple more veterans like Hull, Chelios, Shanahan and Robitaille along with rookie Datsyuk and you will get a SOLID team.
The other thing you have to realize is that they won two cups in the 90s without the FA/traded veterans like Hull, Robitaille and Chelios.
Larionov was the only one that was 40.Originally posted by spikers

Take a look at their current roster. VERY FEW players have come from other NHL teams. Most were drafted by the Red Wings.

This didn't come quick for the Red Wings. Between 1967 and 1990 they only made the play-offs 7 times and beyond round one 3 times.
The management shared between Scotty Bowman and Ken Holland have a LOT to do with this. It helps when your GM (Ken Holland) was one of the top scouts in the NHL.
Larionov was 41.Originally posted by sputnik
