I've gone through 2 (one OC-Z, and one Patriot) in the past 8 months. I'm only using them for O/S, and programs (not for storage). Am I just having bad luck, or are SSD's just not that reliable yet?

Little bit of both I'd wager. They're still not as reliable as spinning disks but going through two in eight months these days is some bad luck :P
From my sources - the lowest RMA rates are with Crucial and Intel drives.
I have had no troubles with my ocz after about 14 months which I was impressed with. I haven't really had a chance to try out my mushkin though as I need to finish installing everything on it after having it a month already
I've been using a Corsair Force 240Gig SSD for a couple of months now, haven't had any issues yet. However it's used lightly, operating system and Diablo 3
I've been rocking an Intel 320 series for about a year, no issues
In reference to Rob Anders:

Sig nuked by mod.
Crucial, Samsung, or Intel are the only SSD's I'd buy after my research. For something running your OS and all your key applications, you don't want to skimp.
Memory expess has the Crucial M4 256GB on sale for $189 now That is a hell of a deal.
Ive been using a Crucial M4 256GB for about 10 days now with zero issues.
My brother has been using two of them in RAID 0 for about 6 months now with zero issues.

Reminds me to back up my MacBook Air.... no issues at all in a month. Makes my iMac look like a slug.
I have 3 OCZ Vertex 3 120GB and a OCZ Agility 3 60GB.... no problems yet...
Are you running Win 7 with TRIM? Did your drives have the latest firmware?
Have you done any optimizations?
If you are letting the drives fill up that could be your problem....

knock on wood, i have had an intel 510 series for over a year with no issues.
I read that somewhere else too... thats why I went with an M4 drive. Almost a year now and no probs.Originally posted by hampstor

hmm, my Intel 510 series 120gb is constantly at %80 capacity.

From what I understand they just run slower if they're really full, not necessarily less reliably. The Intel drives are some of the better ones anyways - they use top tier memory and have good controllers.Originally posted by cam_wmh

Yeap, yeap, and nope. I just did most of those optimizations. Guess time will tell. SSD's never really got full, probably only around 80gigs out of 120.Originally posted by ipeefreely

I've heard bad things about OCZ reliability wise.
Go grab a Crucial M4 (it is what I got, as well as mentioned above). Great drives and what do you know? They are also one of the cheapest on the market.
As for someone saying if your SSD is making weird noises, that isn't necessarily the SSD going bad, they do make noise. Might just notice it in a laptop more if its running quieter.
I've had 2 mushkin's die on me in 2 months.
A coworker's month old OCZ went tits up, symptoms were BSOD's, taking forever to boot, etc.
I've never had a problem with my trusty old Intel- and after reading up on the blue screen issues involving Sandforce drives, I'll be ponying up the cash for another Intel when the upgrade bug kicks me in the ass.
The intel drive use Sandforce controllers too, but I believe it's their own tweaked design.
Intel 520, Samsung 830, or Crucial M4 are the only SSD's I'd buy based on my research.
