Default When to start physiotherapy (Ligament Tear)?

About 10 days ago I tore the ligaments in my ankle (Grade II). After about 4 days I was able to put weight on my ankle and I'm not walking around (with a limp). I'm starting to find that I'm only feeling pain when trying to stand up (after having my leg elevated). It just feels like all the blood rushing into my foot.

Still lots of swelling and the bruising seems to be fading a touch but still visable.

From reading online most people are saying that physio is the only thing that is going to help fully recover. I'm not sure if I should be going back to see a doctor or try physio first.

Anyone had experience with a similar injury?

I believe you need a doctor's note/recommendation for physio anyway. You should probably ask your doc -- he'd be more familiar and knowledgeable than the ballers on Beyond IMO.

I'd definitely see an orthopedic specialist and get their opinion. I had surgery on my ankle back in March and have just started walking around without my air cast on around home.

I still don't start physio for a couple of weeks. It's one of those things that sometimes if you start too early, you can actually do more damage than good.

I'd take it slow and allow it proper time to heal, after all, if you're ankle doesn't heal properly, you will feel it everyday for a long time...

Well so far the doctor just told me to 'RICE' it. He said physio was an option as well but never provided alot of details after that.

I do realize that I should see the doctor again (which I will) however I'd like to hear some personal experiences just to get an idea of what helped and what didn't in recovery. I've search some past threads and found some information but I'd just like to see what other information people can share.

Start on the range of motion excercises, don't push it now, don't make it sore, just shoot for trying not to stiffen up - takes a long time to come back... and if you've been splinter or casted guaranteed you've lost some already...

No splint or cast. I was on crutches for a few days until I could put weight on it. From what I've ready everyone has said as soon as you can put pressure on it, ditch the crutches.

No guessing, go see Terry Kane.... Physical Therapist

He deals with the Flames and other NHL teams. I went to see him for both my knees (with different issues) and he was extremely helpful.

He charges 150$ for 90 minutes, covered by private medical plans (which I dont have). The cost for me was well worth it.
