    Default Rolling Blackouts in Calgary

Feels like we're in California or something haha. Crowfoot was out, restaurants were kicking ppl out, alarms going off, intersections are out, and nobody knows the rules when there's no traffic lights.

    http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/ca...940/story.html

As the mercury soars, rolling power blackouts have hit Calgary as Enmax is curtailing how much power the city is consuming.

The utility is getting its order from the Alberta Electric System Operator, which Enmax said imposed restrictions on how much power is being consumed in the province.

It’s unclear how long the effort will last, but an Enmax helpline said the power outages will last 30 minutes each and will continue until AESO gives the go-ahead to return to normal operations.

Enmax spokeswoman Doris Kaufmann said the company has “shed” 40 megawatts.

    More to come.
Would've been nice if there was some warning. People were absolutely confused and flooding the 311 and Enmax phone lines.

Seems like a knee-jerk reaction. It's not like this is the first time Alberta has been warm.

I'll bet! The rolling black out just hit SE Sheppard Industrial area about 30 min. No clue it was happening and just thought it was odd that it was out for more than a few minutes. Of course by coincidence, our Edmonton head office was also affected by a power outage around the same time. Resorting to cell phones also failed haha. Thought it was the end of the world or something.
Someday we may need to activate the halo structure off Deerfoot and destroy the North East.

WTF? We are turning into third world country.

When traffic lights are out, you wait until they turn back on. It's on page 193 I think.

Got a feeling that Calgary downtown core, Stampede grounds and anywhere 2km within a hotel won't be affected.

Last thing you want is spending a bunch of $ to get visitors coming here and find out you have a ghetto electrical system.

Let the burbs take the hit.

I'm waiting for it to hit my house. Hasn't happened yet. I have everything UPS'd so I can keep my TV on at least.

Not turning down my AC tho haha.

    I got power.

I also got extra ice and jello in the fridge waiting for a possibly inevitable power out. Be prepared and you can usually go for a long stretch as cool as a cucumber.

You would figure a city so close to such an abundant and cheap energy source as coal would never, ever have these sorts of problems.

BTW: Don't discount copper thieves. I couldn't get my regular pickup of pennies today (Germans and mexicans especially love their coins)

They would never power down big boss

I assume my power will be down when I get home from work as it is out all the time, let alone clean drinking water

Power went out here at GSL at 2:15, I can't do my job without power so I had a nice little break!

I really hope this is a joke....

It's supposed to be treated as a 4-way stop....

If you have a/c why not? I mean, other than the crazy usage and the additional heat generated making your a/c work harder? It may not be a smart decision but it sure can be done.

I think this is Alberta's contribution to the USA and their extreme power consumption with their heat wave, so why not do rolling blackouts here so they can sell more power down south with massive profit built in.

This shit sucks. My wife was 10 min from leaving home to go to her evening shift as a nurse. The power went out, the car is in the garage. Managed to tell her how to open the door manually, which was the easy part, but she couldn't reach and wasn't heavy enough to bring it back down. Had to call my buddy who lives not too far away and happened to be off today to come to my place and close my damn garage door. What is this shit, India?
