MaskedBandit, do insurance companies not report claims or payouts to other agencies?
Just asking as I was wondering if someone goes out to buy a S4 with $20k worth of damage and then repairs it will he be able to sell it as a claim free car? Or will the buyer be able to find a record of the damage on Carfax or Carproof?
I can't say 100% for sure as I don't work on the claims side of things but it's my general understanding that it's not the insurance companies themselves that report things to Carproof and such but it's the repair facilities (bodyshops & PDR companies) that report it. Don't take that to the bank though.

I've seen it happen. Like I said before, I wouldn't want to be the guy that got caught doing it but it is possible.

Edit: I should've explained further. On the application there is a question that says "Is there any unrepaired damage on the vehicle?". The idea being that existing damage to a vehicle is excluded from coverage on the new policy. Knowing this, if you try to claim the old damage as "fresh" after the fact, well, that'll land you in some pretty bad shat.

I Believe they use many points of sources (carfax, car proof). But I'm thinking insurance more so than the repair facility. So once the file is closed out, the insurance will know what was paid out on the claim. And carfax/car proof somehow just able to get access to that info and the amount it cost into their system.

Shady stuff, I was looking at a vehicle for sale last year that had hail damage and the guy took the payout.

Me: That's going to cost quite a bit to fix
Seller: You can wait for the next hail storm and claim it.

The damage is recorded against the VIN. So yea if u take a payout without proving its been fixed, different insurance will see it in file.

Masked I guess you can answer this perfectly for me since you're my broker, but is your premium effected by acts of god?

I thought for sure I was hooped, I heard some pretty big bangs last night, came out and I only have one dent on my hood, and one on the passenger door (I have no clue how that happened, but wasn't there before).

I don't think I'm going to bother getting it fixed, hardly noticeable and the truck only gets used driving out to the mountains anyway's so bound to get a little beat up out there eventually.

Technically there is no such thing as "Acts of God" when it comes to auto insurance but I know what you mean. There will be no premium increase to you (or most policies for that matter) due to hail claims. Most insurance companies don't penalize you for weather related claims but there is the odd one.

I got the agreed actual cost value less 35% and your comprehensive deductible.

Can Masked Bandit and anyone further explain how this works to me?

You're basically taking a reduced cash payout for the damage to the vehicle but you can't ever claim hail on that vehicle again unless the damage is repaired. It's not uncommon if the vehicle is some beater / commuter car that you don't really care about.

Hmmm I may as well get them fixed then if it won't cost me anything. Or take the cheque (or do you only get that option when it's super bad?) cause I plan on running this thing to the ground. No need to worry about resale.

I'll wait until the craziness of today settles down though.

Definitely file the claim, no reason not to in your situation.

I forgot about deductible though, which I doubt the amount of damage amount to what mine is, so I think I'll just leave it and fix it myself in the future when I feel like it.

If I picked up a vehicle that had hail damage repaired (shows up on carproof) does that mean that vehicle isn't elligible for any further hail claims or is it per person (again depending on insurance company)?
