It is also a genius scheme to get thousands of people to test-drive the cars. To be honest, while I don't love the car, I am pretty impressed with it. Without Car2go, I would never has driven one.

I always thought they were a ripoff. For the same money, the Yaris was way more practical, and faster.

Snap, I didn't realize the Yaris started at $14k too. I retract my statement.

What if I prefer a super jerky transmission though with no power, ForTwo all the way!

I just looked for one downtown, it's a dead zone from 14th St SW to 4th St SE, between the river and 9th Ave. So much for downtown convience.

Smart fortwo probably starts at around $15,900 (MRSP & freight), Toyota Yaris around $15,415, Chevrolet Spark @ $14,995, Chevrolet Sonic @ $15,165, Ford Fiesta @ $15,549, Honda Fit @ $16,075, Hyundai Accent @ $14,794 - these are prices from one Canadian based web site and probably aren't far off the mark. Lots of choices out there that offer way more utility/space/vehicle then the fortwo that also offer almost as good if not better fuel mileage and all of these other choices offer 4-5 seats.
    Will fuck off, again.

Problem #1, a lot of roads are excluded from the free parking for c2g.

Problem #2, all the c2g cars are left outside the core the after 4pm when people take them home. It's a great alternative for beltline folks to avoid taking public transits.

Problem #3, The area mentioned IS a dead zone after 4pm. There isn't a lot of attraction to keep you there at night. Hence, you won't find much people leaving cars in the area at night.

My parents own a "loaded" Smart car, tow it on a little trailer behind their motorhome. They love the thing to death, although getting it serviced at MB is shockingly expensive. Tons of more practical vehicles out there as mentioned above, If a car the size of a SC is desired, the Toyota is the way to go. It really only seats three in all the reviews I have seen. No way I would ever get into the backseat of anything that small.

The SC to buy was the 2006 diesel (Canada only in NA) if you had to have a SC. My parents wanted a diesel version, I talked them out of it as Smart carts were never sold in the USA in a diesel version. They have no idea WTF the engine is, servicing is just a non event unless you can afford a MB mechanic learning on your diesel SC.

I fear for those renting a Car2Go in winter unless they are putting winter tires on each vehicle. I have had the white knuckle experience driving a Smart car in winter without the proper tires, never again. Any idea if they are running all 350 vehicles out to Bob for a tire changeover?

They have 150 cars right now, looking at getting over 50 more by fall.

As per their website, you must observe Snow Route bans and do not END your rental in a snow route. It doesn't say what if you end your rental and THEN a snow route ban happens on the street you parked on.

That would be a good question for them.

Actually when equipped with winter tires they are quite good in the winter. I drove one for a couple of winters (company car) and it rarely ever got stuck and when it did it was pretty easy to get it unstuck. The only thing that scared me winter driving a smart car was taking it out on deerfoot when it's icy. With the higher speeds and the grooves in the road, made me very uneasy, like the car was going to go into a spin at any moment with the help of the short wheelbase.

You are severely over-estimating the driving skills of most of the population. If you can't get out buy pinning the gas as hard as you can, then they're going to get stuck.

They're certainly big, but I don't know if they are the BEST I've tasted.

Got an email from Car2Go to do a survey... Ends up it's based on "after using Car2Go, how likely is it you'll consider buying a SMART, etc."

Yesterday I tried to get 3 car2go's that said they were available but then got a No Connection error. I guess they have problems communicating in cloudy conditions.
