Default Buying older than 15 years - insurance safety inspection?

    Nothing recent about this...

I have 2 questions for you Calgary Beyonders:

    1. Does your insurance require a safety inspection? (TDMM requires it for anything 15 yrs and older)
    2. Where do you get it done these days? (places that won't rip you off)...

1 more...is there a website that shows the checklist so I can have a look before I buy a car?

TDMM has never asked me for an inspection. As recent as May this year I insured a shitbox with them so I wouldn’t have to replace the windshield or put good tires on it. Has that changed recently?

Zero insurance inspection on my 27 year old Miata. TDMM here.

Personally the inspections are a joke. I get it that they want to make sure that vehicles are "safe" but c'mon there are many loop holes out there to get around these inspections and being that the inspection is done only at the time of purchase we all know how derelict vehicles get because nobody does maintenance.

With that said most of the insurance companies I've talked to want a inspection done on a 15 year old or older car.

Whhhhaat?...are you insured with it as a daily driver though? Or is it in the "collectible" category? I think that might be why...

The industry standard is 12 years but everyone quit asking for them when Covid hit. Some companies have started asking for them again but it seems pretty hit & miss. If you Google Alberta Vehicle Safety Inspection Form it'll come up so you can see the checklist, it's pretty straight forward.

Ya, that's what I've heard...I guess what I REALLY want to know, is if anyone on here does them lol PM me if you do or "know someone".

I can use common sense and check over things I would already be checking when I buy a car, but I just want to know if there is an actual checklist floating around that I can see.

I had an 'insurance inspection' on my vehicles and it was the same mechanic off of kijii - 5 min and 50$.

Daily. Collectible status is pretty restrictive on mileage and usage.

Well I guess this whole thread was a waste of time lol...finally got through to TDMM, can confirm that they no longer require safety inspections period.

Not that I condone it but 40$ on kijiji and anything will pass inspections...

It might be an age thing too, I remember getting asked for inspections when I was younger but after about 25 they stopped. Wasn't like I was buying nicer cars, either.

I signed my own using my AME license number, lol. I asked straight out of I could, and the girl said "Well, if you can inspect an airplane, I guess you can inspect a car".

    Those things have zero merit.

TDMM here as well. Bought a 15 yo car in February, before COVID hit Alberta and had no inspection. I even told them it needed a bunch of work before it could be driven and what parts I was putting on (aftermarket stuff).

Anyone have a contact for someone that does cheap inspections? I contacted a couple people on kijiji but haven't heard back.
