    Default Computer soooo slow!

Im pretty retarded when it comes to this, but my computer has been running ridiculously slow lately.
It is a proper build from MemExpress, and i've never had a problem with it until now.

For the past couple years i have been running eset NOD32, and Spybot S+D, and the Windows scans, all find nothing wrong.

I see no issues with my computer in and of itself, however, internet browsing is ridiculously slow... and i know its not my local connection, since another computer in my place works 10x as fast browsing, and its a crappier unit.

What could be wrong? Since all the scans show nothing?

Ive also checked startup in system config. and nothing unnecessary is being run at startup.

    Pissing me off it is.

Check your HD data speeds with a simple tool like Crystal Disk mark.

If your drive is failing, it will tend to slow down over time as the heads/surfaces/etc. degrade.

Your drive SMART status should also tell you a bit (although SMART isnt 100% reliable).

Verify that your system hasn't become infected somehow and using a 3rd part proxy for your internet connection.

swak what is the browser you use?
Those CMD numbers look fine to me - problem is not there obviously.

    Uh, I'm running . . . . well this is embarrassing, I'm not sure.
it's a Dell build from about five years ago. Would have been pretty high end at the time.

I know it's not going to match anything newer, just wanted to see if it was malfunctioning. I have plans for an upgrade, but have been spending all my money n kid stuff lately.

    So, slightly on topic.
Aside from any issues I may have with my desktop, something is making my NAS really slow.
I'm running a Dlink DNS-323, and even browsing the folders stored on it is awful. It hangs up about half the time. If I do brows to the folder I want, transferring files can be really bad. Seems to be slightly intermittent.

Not sure if this is a problem with the desktop I'm using to access the NAS from, the connection somehow (wired connection through my router, both ways), a problem with the hard disks in the NAS (WD 1.5TB Caviar Green), or some problem inside the NAS.

what's a reasonable way to troubleshoot this?

here's the first place to start ..

    download ccleaner http://www.piriform.com/CCLEANER

    run the cleaner.

    run the registry cleaner

click and open the tools -> startup

disable things like googleupdate.exe, divx update, adobe, quicktime etc etc.

you'll see a few programs for things you know you hardly use disable them - if you do not know what it is for leave it enabled.

    (do leave java update enabled)

reboot and see if that helps.

If Task Manager shows the CPU and memory as normal, then the next step is to try the computer out in Safe Mode With Networking. If it's still slow in SMWN, then 99% of the time, the cause will be a failing hard drive.

I've found that type of hard drive test to be much more accurate than drive testers.

    run the cleaner.

    run the registry cleaner
Neither of those have any impact on computer performance.

In fact, the former will delete the IE cache, which is designed to make web pages load faster.

The latter is full out snake oil, but even worse, can damage your operating system.

Seth I know you know more than me but I can only say what has worked for me - and each of the processes has helped on more than a few computers that I have cleaned.

    1. from microsoft.com ....

    Remove temporary files

    Run once a week

Your computer can pick up and store temporary files when you're looking at webpages and even when you're working on files in programs, such as Microsoft Word. Over time, these files slow your computer's performance. You can use the Windows Disk Cleanup tool to rid your computer of these unneeded files and to help your PC run faster.
    http://www.microsoft.com/athome/setu...id=PKASVo1jAwP

For me cleaning temp files is a must in the first step of any computer related maintenance as it speeds up any following processes. CCleaner does the same job as recommended above by microsoft only it is both quicker and more thorough.

    2. He could avoid using the registry cleaner if he wants. However, ccleaner is the least intrusive registry cleaner out there and it does allow a backup. I use it and have only had positive results.

    3. CCleaner is also the safest and easiest way for the non savvy to enable or enable processes. Someone brought one computer for me too look at and it had over 30 extra processes and updaters running.

    4. The next step if the above three do not help is to check for disk errors ... of course ... as I mentioned above cleaning several gigs of temp files as recommended above will also speed up the process.
