    Default Let's Talk TV

I'm looking for a new TV; 27 inches or bigger. I don't want to pay more then $600 bucks. I found a few -- tell me what you know about them -- and please, post up reviews and/or comments about these items.

    JVC AV-27FA44 27" Flat Screen I'Art TV -- $529CDN

    Toshiba 27AF43 27" Flat Screen TV -- $479CDN

    Sony Wega KV27FS100 27" TV -- $549CDN

I'm wondering if it's worth risking my sanity and going to International Stereo or Soundsaround to bargain for a better deal.

I love the Sony's -- but the Toshiba has got it going too!!

When I went looking for a new TV about a year ago, I did the same sort of thing. I looked at them all, and eventually, I went with the Sony Wega. At the time, the Sony had, IMO, the best picture quality of the group, and the most lifelike color.

Sony or Toshiba. I have yet to see a JVC with good picture.

Wega is nice, but you want to get the best picture tube possible.

This is the kind of information I'm looking for. I've heard wonderful things about the Toshiba's... and since both the Wega and the Toshiba are not made in Japan anymore -- I don't really think I need to worry.

Toshiba or Sony... Toshiba or Sony... hmmm

Try to find a Hitachi - i know for widescreens they build the projectors that most other companies use (i.e. Sony). They are the highest rated projector maker - I'm sure their tubes can't be bad at all. But Sony is always a good buy IMO.

You have already made the major choice...and that weeding out eh JVC...now with the Toshiba and the Sony, having used to work in teh industry...The Toshiba gives you the features the Sony will offer you at the same price point, for less money if that makes sense...

With the sony you do pay for those Four Letters on the front of the cabinet, vs. other manufactuers...

Your best bet...take ina DVD and have it played on the Tv's you are looking at, but pick a very familer scene...so its something you can really sit down and compare the pic to...I mean for some they really do like the "brightness" of the Sony, I preferred my Toshiba in a heartbeat...

He is looking for a CRT not a projection TV.

The two best projection TVs are Hitachi and Pioneer. Sony is actually worse than JVC when it comes to projection. Sony, however, does make some of the best CRTs.

I would go with Toshiba too

Right now I'm trying to decide if I want to just splurge and purchase a 32inch TV instead of wasting my time with a 27inch. Hmm... decisions, decisions.

    Think about it like this.

    27" TV = 15" monitor
    32" TV = 17" monitor
    36" TV = 19" monitor
    40" TV = 21" monitor

40" CRT only comes in the WEGA XBR. It is a heavy mofo.

You have to at least get a 32"...

If you get a Sony, get a Hi-Scan. It is the same picture tube as last year's XBR.

And just dipping in a general question - are the WEGAs worth it for proj TVs? Why are they do damn expensive?

I have that Toshiba TV except mine's a 24". I think it's amazing. The Sony's are really nice and Sony was one of the first companies to pioneer flat screen technology but Toshiba was right behind them.

My TV is pretty clear when playing video games or watching movies on it as well.

    My vote goes to Toshiba!

I have a Toshiba - last year's model - Not really happy with it. The picture isn't the best, and the price didn't coincide with that. Decent pic, decent sound - but nothing entirely special.

I also have an RCA TV, bigger, 100x more features, and about the same price. That, and the picture is much better. If the Sony is the same price, definately go for that - can't get much better.

I was just trying to give you a relative comparison. Basically, I was saying that a 27" TV is usable but damn small.

    32" is workable.
    36" is ideal
    40" is what everyone wants.

These are just my opinions. not facts.

I think that you should get the biggest you can afford.

The price will come down. It is new technology. Right now, I think that the best picture is the Samsung with DLP. I forget alot of the research I did.

I bought a TV in October and did a lot of research... but after buying one, you stop caring...

Remeber that CRTs are going the way of the DoDo. It is projection, LCD and Plasma now.

I think that Plasma's will become affordable in the next two years. Think of it as the equivalent shift from Black and White TV to color.

The reason I ask is I have a big cantilever thing in my living room and it can hold up to a 60 inch TV - so buying a big fat projection makes more sense than a smaller plasma (cost a factor of course).

But when I was looking at the WEGAs I just noticed they were a LOT more for a picture difference I couldn't really see. Mind you it was a quick browse, not buying for a few more months.

Soundaround has this amazing Pioneer for 5 grand - it looked really really damn nice.

Anyword of advice if I try going to Soundsaround or International Stereo to try and haggle them on lowering the price on a TV??

I think I'm going to go 32inch -- as long as I can afford something worth buying (Sony or Toshiba).
