Default Starting in the music game

Hey guys, I'm just wondering if anyone knows what I should do. I've been writing songs and showing them to friends and they really like it and I enjoy doing it so I'm trying to record some music and whatnot and I'm just wondering if anyone knows what I should do to get started?

Does that include rap, if so, make a sound clip and send it to me.

I used to be a DJ... made all my tracks using analog multitrackers back in the old days. There's TONS of digital multitrack/sequencers available on PC now, so it's a matter of finding the software. There's a few free ones out there that's pretty feature rich, so you can start with those.

A good friend of mine, who's still a DJ, makes all his music on his Pentium 3. He's released about 12 records now commercially. Pretty cheap to put together a home studio nowadays.

That's pretty cool, but I don't even have a mic, and my computer is trash. I guess in the long run it's cheaper to get it fixed and get those programs, a friend was telling me about a place where I could record and it's like $100 an hour, that could get expensive quick.
