Default Gone and done it to myself this time...FML

The past two weeks after I came back from vacation, work has been a shit-show. One worker went down with sickness. One job was just a series of fuck-ups...I've been playing catch-up and not doing very good at. FINALLY yesterday looked like the turn around. Lots getting done, everyone back to work. Next big jobs are lined up, ready to go...and THEN...

I'm gassing up the van and about to drive away, but realized I forgot to grab my receipt. Throw it into Park and turn to hop out of the van..I land on my right foot with all 200 lbs and my ankle does a complete 90 degree roll. I hear a loud "POP" and instantly my vision goes white...hearing starts to fade and that sick-to-your-stomach feeling when you get kicked in the balls. Collapsed on the ground, I can't move. Fellow beside me asks if I'm alright but I can hardly hear him and I'm fading fast...

I can't even get back up into my van. The lady from inside the gas station comes out to help and calls the ambulance. Couple shots of morphine and I'm off to foothills. Small fracture in the bone and almost tore the tendon right off the bone. They say I likely won't need surgery, but not ruling it out. 2-3 weeks on crutches with no weight on the air-cast, after that, let pain be my guide.

    F. M. L!!!!

Two big jobs to start this week...behind as it is. Fuuuuuuuuuuck.

Ouch! I had that happen to me, Its going to take more than 2-3 weeks for that to fully heal. And the sad thing is when I go on walks for more than an hour my ankle swells up and aches for a few days after.

Thanks. Yeah I suspect a good couple of months at least. I keep running into little conundrums; I made a pot of coffee, poured a cup, and now having a hell of a time trying to get back to the couch with my cup. By the time I get there, I've spilled almost the whole cup of coffee.
Also, I don't know if I'll be able to drive with my left foot, and where do I put my big honkin right foot and cast while doing so?
The van is still up at the gas station in the NW. Wifey is gonna be a grumpy chauffeur for awhile.

    Sorry to hear man.

Make sure that when you can put some weight on it, to go to physio. I have been told it helps. I sprained my ankle back in January, didnt do anything for it in terms of official rehab, and it still bugs me a little bit to the day. So in other words, if you want the best and fastest recovery, go to physio and keep up with whatever they tell you to do!

Good luck in the coming weeks/months.

Also, crutches will soon become your most hated enemies.

    Dave,

Make sure you buy a really good ankle (brace?) from the medical stores. I'm assuming you do quite a bit of walking around the construction sites. It saves me from doing more damage walking on the un graded ground a few years back.

Those injuries make me sick, I've had two absolutely terrible ankle injuries, both sports related

How much is the ambulance bill going to be?
    Will the morphine cost extra?

Ouch! That's a tough "break" for sure...yuk yuk yuk.

Sersiosly though that looks like a bitch to deal with. Guys of our "mature" standing in life don't heal like we did when we were 17 either. However old man toughness can carry you through a lot. Good luck with the recovery.

    You crack me up.

Don't know what ambulance rides are going for now. I suspect up around $150 or so? But, yes that was going through my mind when the gas station lady said she called one!
Morphine was on the house...got 10 mg in the ambulance. But I do not like Morphine. Not a nice high.

The air cast and crutches cost me close to $200. For the life of me, I don't understand why AHA doesn't cover those things.

Gah, my buddy fractured his ankle wake skating over the long weekend in Vernon. Two screws and a small metal plate later his foot looks like it is rotting and about to fall off! I hope yours is not as bad as his.

Wishing you a speedy recovery Dave!

Thanks KRyn. I guess it'll be awhile before I can do those 3-plate squats huh? lol.
Eww...he wasn't at Foothills yesterday was he? There was a guy right beside me who had pins put in, but he had gotten an infection and his foot looked like what you described. I felt a LITTLE better after that lol.

You can do it! A few years back I had to drive my 5-speed car all the way from Invermere to Saskatoon with a cracked right hip and a broken right radius! Going through Calgary sucked but I didn't have a choice since I was travelling alone hahaha

Definitely can relate to setback after setback just when it seems like you'll finally catch up on work.

Good luck with a speedy recovery.

Did the same thing a couple of months ago except I broke my leg, blew out my ankle and pulled the ligament so hard it actually pulled the tip of the bone off, what a mess.

Before surgery, notice the big gap in my ankle:

    After surgery, all fixed:

    I feel your pain.

ambulance - 300ish last time I had the pleasure...

Don't sit around drinking too many beers - you'll have a much worse recovery if you don't keep active.

Pull out that creeper from the garage you can still work
