Yup, I was parked Monday with my back up lights on, just checked my three mirrors, and turned in my seat to start backing up and there was someone walking right behind me.
Thank god I looked one last time.

This. Also people that see you backing out of a stall, and still try to squeeze their car past you at a high rate of speed. Apparently them getting to their parking spot is way more important than me backing out (when it is painfully obvious that I was half out of my stall before they were even close).

this is why i back into spots instead of backing out of them...never had anyone walk in behind me when backing into a space

Yeah backing into a spot is awesome but the downside is that it's a pain to access the trunk. So whenever I can I do backup but not for a grocery store.

You still have to pay attention though, someone changed lanes almost in to me on 10th street where the bike/transit lane ends

Yup ditto (think it was a cscc guy) was worried about the slope/grass, had to hit steeper due to that last minute minivan swerve...


Thankfully traction control handled it, back end was sliding and I thought I was going over for a second...

I would actually say that its less about aiming for the ditch, and more about situational awareness... The next lane might be safer than the ditch if there isnt anyone close in that lane...
