    Default Windows 8? Thoughts?

    Hey guys,

Did an upgrade of my existing Win 7 laptop to Windows 8, and although in the beginning I was very lost, I am getting the feel for it now. Not sure if I like it yet or not, but being in IT I kind of have to know it, so figure might as well get a good start on it. What does everyone else think of it? So far to me it seems to be so dumbed down, that even a Mac user could use it.

I need to see the Windows 8 commercials on TV to have any opinion at all. As a Mac user I am too simple to form my own opinions and as a Windows user I am too afraid to update from Windows 7. I am not in one camp or the other, my only concern is using the best software to get my job done.

Think in a month or so, but its available on MSDN if you are a subscriber, or your "other" channels. The final version is out.

I was so lost in Win8 at first, thanks god for YouTube and a walkthrough

I am on the fence as well. Something I really like about it, especially me being someone who uses the same 5 programs, the shell really speeds things up.

My only gripe right now is drivers, my 680 doesn't run battlefield 3 very well on 8.

I'm on the fence with 8 right now, I might touch it in 3-4 years once its mature enough.

I checked it out online and it looks really gimmicky.

Its so far fetched from Windows original layout.
How is it in comparison? Do you lose features? Or is it more and more like a mac?

Are you using it with a touch screen / slate / tablet? I have been using the consumer preview every once in a while, but still can't figure out how to do everything with just a normal laptop.

    which youtube video helped you?

Windows 8 is now in RTM stage which is Release to Manufacturers.

The unfortunate thing about Windows 8 is that they have completely removed the start menu and now rely solely on the "Metro" interface which means its a OS designed for tablet use not a desktop.

They have done things to the OS that should have been implemented a long time ago, but the interface itself will be its downfall.

As long as my Windows 7 runs everything I need it to, I highly doubt I'll be upgrading. Especially to the first version which, typical from Microsoft, is likely to be buggy.

I work in IT as well, and everyone I talk to, to the last person, is muttering "Windows ME"

My personal feelings after testing out the RTM: Avoid like the plague. It's awful. If you're on Windows 7, STAY on Windows 7. It has support all the way through to 2020, so it's here for a while.

Why is it like ME? ME was so shitty because it was written as a branch of the crappy win98 code base. win8 is based on win7 code, so all the "buggy" complaints are moot. getting used to the new interface on the other hand is definitely a valid concern.

IMO, it's not as bad as people make it out to be... people are just scared of change as always. after october all new machines will be shipping out with it, so it'll slowly phase its way into life and everyone will eventually get used to it.

For my PC I'll probably stick to 7. But I might get that microsoft Slate tablet and use 8. It looks like a really good fit for tablets and laptops.

i like it for mobile/HH devices, hate it for real computing needs until touch screen monitors become super cheap.

I'll be trying to avoid this upgrade. I don't think it does much for desktops. Tablet pcs, maybe. I'm not looking forward to it at all.

Have they brought the option to get rid of the stupid metro interface and just use the start menu?

I used to beta when it first came out and went back to windows 7 after about 10 minutes of use.

At this point they have no intentions of this. And anything people have done to alter it.. Microsoft has blocked it.

All the comments relating to ME I have heard are not relating to the code, but to the fact that there is predicted to be a very low rate of installment and a very high rate of abandonment. That's what the comment was about.

Well that blows. They should have made a desktop version and a tablet/touchscreen version. I won't be changing anytime soon if they don't bring back the start bar or a way to fix it is found.

Uhh... there still is a classic desktop.
