Final brainstorm of the morning- with our suitcase-style 120W solar panel, I've just been using the jumper-cable-style clamps to hook it onto the battery, but that just became a whole bunch more inconvenient now that I'm running two boxes with a substantial amount of wiring between them (2x 6v batts, shunt, shutoff switch, etc).

I was originally going to source some quick-connect (i.e. MC4 or similar) wiring and just leave it dangling on the exterior of the battery boxes; but it occurred to me this morning, could I not just use a female 7-way connector to hook the panel up? Seems reasonable to me. Thoughts?

I have a similar setup to you, with shunts and switches, but I personally went with a 175A Anderson and a 50A Anderson plug coming out of my battery boxes.

IMO gives it a bit more useability, I use those andersons for everything and they just seem to last. Also its nice with the large 175 we often connect multiple trailers together/inverters (some of my buddies dont have a big enough solar setup and I hate hearing generators run in the mid of the day when I have tons of excess power). Then the 50 if I want to tie our other solar setup in etc. PM me if you want a picture.

Not saying the 7 pin wouldnt work, I just hate all trailer connectors with a passion as they always seem to get full of dirt, or twisted etc.

Added a proper battery monitor to the trailer yesterday, along with a pair of GC2 batteries (a la ExtraSlow; H/T for the recommendation). Our tired Group 24 with 65Ah rated wasnt enough for three nights "offshore".

For $60 it seems like a cheap way to truly understand how much power you're using and help you treat your lead acids kindly. I opted for the "350A" shunt thinking that I might add a 2000W inverter at some point; it's frigging huge and kind of annoying as it's so thick you cannot mount it directly on the post of a battery. Ended up brazing/soldering a bunch of short leads to hook it all together, time consuming PITA. In hindsight I'd probably just go for the 100A shunt next time around as it can handle up to something like 150A (100A is what they call "typical" load.)

    A bargain versus a $300 Victron unit.

The biggest pain of the whole process was definitely running the lead from the battery boxes to the cabin of the trailer, which surprised me. Had to cut an access hatch in the corrugated floor sheathing and couldn't fish the wire into the wall next to the factory-installed battery/tank unit as they run wires then install grey/black tanks making it impossible to follow that route.

Another repair/improvement made last night (probably my favourite thus far). Our Dometic fridge's incandescent festoon bulb was burnt out. I shopped around for a while looking at LED festoon replacements but was never very excited about spending $20 on a bulb I wasn't convinced would last with all the condensation/temperature fluctuations in the fridge.

After reading about it from someone else online, I scrounged up a 12" chunk of under-cabinet LED lighting from my junk drawer and soldered a wire directly to the festoon bulb base. amazing light; feels like a brand new fridge. Will post a pic later of my shitty rusty old fridge with beyond baller lighting.
shunts are a pain in the ass, you can get easy clip on meters
(this photo is just an example of what i mean)

I bought a shunt and then decided the way I wanted it wired was going to be a massive pain. So I never installed it. Glad that 2x GC2 is now "a-la-extraslow". That tickles me.

I bought the Juntek VA Shunt, pretty impressed with it really, I liked that they are wireless and there is nothing that I needed to mount or cut holes in the trailer, just 1 extra cable going from the batteries through the shunt and into the disconnect the trailer and away you go. Just use a little booster pack on it when I want to see the status, and unplug it and throw it in the drawer when im not using it. I typically go through 12-15% charging phones at night, and the furnace running, fridge on propane running etc on 2x6V's.

Worth the $45 imo to know whats going on.

    What is a shunt?

Also regarding the toilet do you guys just try and use minimal paper and then just flush it out when dumping.

I have a friend and he doesn’t even use paper they just wipe with wipes and put it in a bucket next to the toilet then put that in the garbage.

You don't need a shunt. Ignore that talk.

Yes, I try to get everyone to use minimal paper, but it all goes into the tank.

Having a poo paper bucket seems super nasty especially with young kids

Just make sure you have enough water/liquids in the tank when you empty it. I’ve never had an issue and don’t even bother with RV toilet paper

Yes, the solution is always more water. Water in the tank before you use it, more water when you flush. Enough water to fill the tank before you dump it. Flush with more water than you think. Store it with water in the black tank between trips. Water water water.

I don’t own an RV. But any time I have used someone else’s the rule has been hard no on toilet usage. Sometimes #1 ok but never 2.

Take a walk to the outhouse or piss in the woods.

    Seems fair to me.

The adults shit in the outhouse. For me it's a strong preference anyway. Those rv toilets have small bowls, and it is possible to coil up tall enough to touch your sack while sitting there. True story. Mid-shit flush is required if you eat a lot of fibre. But I just like the outhouse.

Especially the way I eat when camping

Well, it's actually a worse problem if you eat healthy.

I usually shit in the outhouses or wherever but this campground everything is crowded and dirty plus I prefer no pressure shitting whereas in my lane of the loop there are 20 sites sharing a single stall, and often a line up.

What's the point of having a camper, if you don't use the toilet?

I haven't had any issues at all with ours. My only "trick" is that last camping trip of the season, I dump the tanks at the campground, then fill both tanks with water and bleach, then drive home so the bleach water can slosh around loosening any solids and sanitize a bit. Then dump all that in (or close to) Calgary.

My camper is really a rolling beer fridge and a rain shelter.

Probably because I grew up using a camper that had no toilet at all, it I consider the toilet pretty low on the list of priorities.

1/2 full and dump the cooler ice in - adds some short term abrasive to really knock stubborn high fiber diet Klingons off.
