Typically at this point in the year the trees are much higher moisture with having leaves on them, which means they will take much longer to season into firewood.

Lots of sap on everything as well, if you wait till Jan-Feb, its a completely different animal. That being said, I know its a tough thing for me really want to do when its miserable cold and wet.

but if you're forced to cut dead or deadfall...does it really matter?

You can only use deadfall in the PLUZ (random camping) areas and for that you don't need a permit. The permit is for cutting live trees to take firewood home and as codetrap says, it has to be seasoned for a year before burning.
Any campgrounds inside PP's, you can't burn or collect dead fall.

Yeah, permit is for deadfall only, we were out near waiporous the other weekend and had a permit, we were camping so we just grabbed what we needed for the weekend, but there is quite a bit of stuff fallen near the roads sometimes, often the province goes in there and cuts a bunch down to thin things out, especially near the roads.

We did do a big haul early in the year though from a friends private land, with 2 chainsaws, a couple recip saws, 6 people and a quad, and a flat deck tow truck to load 7ft sections on to... we were able to pull a couple cords.. definitely a lot better deal to just buy it as suggested above for $100/truck if you value your time... but i am cheap, and its a good workout, so i'll probably do it again.

You're only allowed to cut standing-live birch, everything else has to be standing-dead or deadfall, according to the TM66 conditions. Only need a permit if you're taking it home. Dont need it to cut and burn while camping.

Have a few updates. Firstly, this firewood discussion is timely, because I just picked up ten back of kiln-dried birch from firewood depot this morning. I've used this stuff in the past, and it's awesome. So dry, you don't really need kindling, and there is virtually no smoke. Good for cooking over, and good for sitting around. I've had some bad expereinces with the bagged wood at the campgrounds being wet, so this takes some of that hassle out of the equation. Slightly bigger bags than the campgrounds, so ten bags is a lot of wood! Don't plan on burning it all in one weekend, but it's all loaded in the trailer anyway.

Have been having problems with my fresh water fill hose for ages. Ran a coat hanger in, looking for an obstruction, and didn't find anything. broke down and bought this spout thingy, and it ensures an air gap, thus meaning I can fill the tank at full blast now. Used to take half an hour to trickle it in. Overflows work too, as per second pic.

here's some more info on the permits, TM66 i think is the permit most people typically get

    http://www.agric.gov.ab.ca/app21/for...ting%20Permits

still only allowed maximum of 7 tress with it though, but thats realistically probably a pickup load.

I bought my firewood bulk at Burnco. 0.17/lb for Pine, 0.21/lb for Birch. A ~4x4 section of my truck bed, filled to the top was about 375lbs of pine, $67.

yeah we bought a "little" 4ton electric splitter, i say little because even though its considered weaksauce in comparison, it split everything we threw at it, and it was only $200, best investment ever, saved a lot of time, and backs, and axes

Have you talked to the dudes at Hobo Camper Country? Usually cheaper than dealerships. Although, suspect those are the kind of thing you can find online too.
