Didn't want to start a new thread so thought I would try hear. Went looking today to purchase our first trailer and found a couple we liked. Is there room for negotiation on the price of these? Everything we looked at is new and I think we've narrowed it down to the two we like. They are at different dealerships. Just not sure how to approach this as it's the first time buying a trailer. Any tips would be appreciated. The salespeople were basically making it sound like these are flying off the lot.

    1. I got laughed out of the room last spring when I tried to negotiate more than $500 off a 25k trailer (used, hail damaged, piece of shit). They are flying off the lot. Total waste of time.

    2. Don't buy a new trailer.

Now that you've learned what you like, watch the used market like a hawk and when you find a good deal, jump on it.

edit: the real advice here is to buy @ExtraSlow 's trailer when he lists it in mid-July.

This is a tough year to get into trailer ownership. Where are you going to camp? If you don't already have reservations, forget it.

New trailers are a terrible value. They all break and are assembled poorly. Used trailers all need new batteries, tires and brakes, so ~$3k-ish, but then they are basically new.

If you want mine, give me a shout.

New trailers sell themselves. Absolutely no deals to be had and the used ones I’ve looked at decently priced were in rough shape and trailers in better condition were priced close to new.

Looks like another year in the cabin tent for me.

really hard year to get into trailering for the first time. I'm not joking when I say you'd better already have your camping location lined up.

As for camping locations we have always tented and booked our spot a week out looking for cancellations or private campgrounds. I realize its impossible to book provincial sites right now but I'll take that risk. I'm not buying a trailer because of COVID and something to do, this is something we will continue to use. We have two dogs now and I'm not sleeping in a tent with them. Haha.

So Extraslow how big is this trailer you are selling? I'm looking at smaller trailers 22-23 ft. I've been watching Kijiji and some Facebook groups but haven't seen much that seems like much of a deal. Newer used trailers seem to be going within 5k of new model.

Mines a 2018 Grand Design Imagine 2400bh. I think a little too much trailer for you. But we can talk.

Thanks for the info but definitely too much for me. It's just two of us and two dogs so looking for something smaller and I can safely tow with a half ton.

This one is a thicc girl. Needs the right half ton or you'll be in for a bad time. Especially if you load the front storage with 300lbs if gear like I do.

It's between 750 and 900. I'll have to go look at the scale tickets.

Really going back and forth on buying a trailer but have narrowed it down to these three. None of the dealers seem to want to move on price so I'm not sure if I'm going to go ahead with this. Any comments on any of these selections? The third option is quite a bit more then the other two though.

The winnies have a reputation for better quality. But then again, that is hard to define. I personally like the wolf pup best of the three, the big dinette and bigger fridge appeal. Of you find one with an outdoor kitchen That is something I use constantly, but probably not until you get into bigger units.

5000lbs gvwr is nice handy size.

Thanks I appreciate your advice on this. The Winnebago is $15k more then the Wolf Pup. I don't see the the value there but I'm new to this. Basically it seems like the tandem axle, the way the walls/unit is built (comfort camping/insulation which I don't think helps me as I won't be camping outside May-Oct) and supposed quality behind the brand. I like the tandem axle idea but not sure if its worth it for my first unit.

    15k more? Fuck no.
Honestly, you will own this thing for 2 seasons and then change anyway. Either larger, or bunk, or Expedition style or something. Right now you need a basic box for the lowest price.

Single vs tandem axles is a small deal on a light traiker like this. Don't sweat that.

Ok thanks. The only reason the Winnebago was a consideration was because the wife liked the look of it and I liked the idea of tandem axle for the safety aspect. Winnebago is $40k + batteries/hitch. Wolf Pup is 26k with batteries/hitch. I'm looking for used still as well similar to Wolf Pup but haven't came across much yet. Being patient though.

My serious advice, is to get $20k in cash, and buy the first one you like from kijiji that is under that amount without delay, ideally around $15k. Then you can spend 1-3k on batteries, tires etc (if required) and be miles ahead financially.
If you need help inspecting a trailer that's around Calgary, I can help you, but this year, you can't mess around too much. Stuff is selling quick.

    This

We went for a new trailer last year that was supposedly one of the higher quality units and it's been back to the shop nearly a half dozen times for warranty repairs . They're assembled by piece workers meaning it's very much quantity over quality.
