Giving some consideration to selling my tent trailer and buying a hybrid trailer. We arrived at a couple campsites this year in near darkness and setting up a tent trailer in the dark is only slightly better than setting up a cabin tent in the dark. Not sure yet how I feel about having to pay for storage, and not being able to keep my trailer on my driveway in the summer w/o neighbours complaining about it (the tent trailer is relatively small and a low profile).
lol, its funny 5 years ago i said the same thing, now i am ready to move from the hybrid to a hardwall trailer.

So far this year 31 camping days 23 nights at 8 different locations. Looking to go one more time this weekend but the weather really sucks in Central Alberta to head out to. Have a booking at Red Lodge Provincial Park this weekend.

Who is planning to head out this weekend?

I managed 26 nights which is about average I think. 4 weekend or long weekends and then a 2 week trip.

One thing you shouldn't do though is figure out how much it costs you per night to camp. When I sold my last trailer, I was like "losing $10K over 4 years on a new trailer isn't bad". Then I figured I probably camped 25 nights a year over those 4 years so 100 nights which makes it $100/night for depreciation! Not even considering storage, maintenance, added gas when towing and then the campsite. Probably costs anywhere from $150-$200 per night then. That made me sad lol

So I try not to think about that anymore.

You have kids? Because staying at a hotel with kids is really expensive. Makes RVing way cheaper, esp. if you prepare your own food. Also being out in nature can't be beat.

you need to approach the same way as with economics of machine. So take 5 year horizon, say normally you would go on average 20 day on holidays a year, say $150/day on average hotel cost gives you approx. ~3000/year add to it cost of food not eating at restaurants say for family of four close to $200/day and your cost would be closet to #50 a day prepping yourself that si another 2500-3000 so total of $6000/year, consider that camping is not free so you have cost say average $40/day so total ~800/year so net savings should be around ~5000/year, take 5 year and it ends up $25000. I am not including travel cost as this would be same no matter what accommodation you are using. You take RV cost and subtract 25000 and check what is "salvage" cost of 5 year old RV that you would sell after 5 years and see if you are loosing money. I did calc like this and figured if I use it for two weeks, and keep it fot ten years I am breaking even on my unit. So far used more that two weeks a year.

Where are you staying that costs $150/day for a family? You can't even stay in Edmonton for that cheap. Banff for instance is around $300/day in low season.
