Ok I will have a look when I get back. So if the valves are closed and you turn on the water heater and there’s no water getting to it then it burns out because it has no water in it?

I have a feeling the old owner showed me this valve you are referring to but it was on the water heater.
yeah, expecially on electric, the element can burn out instantly if there's no water, i am not sure how propane would be impacted by no water.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but your hot water tank is full if you turn on a hot water tap in your trailer and you get water...or sometimes i'll lift the lever on the pressure relief valve.
no, if your hot water tank is disabled the cold water will just run through the lines bypassing th tank, you'll still get water, the pressure valve is a good way to check though.

    this explains is pretty well

I’m pretty sure on this particular trailer it’s only gas hot water because there’s a water heater button and if the propane is off it locks the system out.

I have photos but my internet right now is too poor to upload

Do you guys turn off your hot water tank heaters when you aren’t using it? To save on propane?

Nah, I only used one 30g bottle our last trip that was 18 nights, hot water tank was on the entire time except while traveling, and used the stovetop a couple of times daily for coffee kettle, and the fridge on propane at 1/2 the sites.

Also it wasn't even full when we started the trip, we used that same bottle last year for a September weekend, where we were using the furnace at night too. So really, a hot water tank doesn't use a while lot.

yeah, turn it on like half hour before you need it, they chug propane in my experience... when i was new, i ran the water tank because i thought it was the furnace, i ran through 40lbs in a day

see my above post for our usage. You must have a massive tank.

We rarely need hot water and only turn it on half hour before use then shut it off after. We've only done four trips with the trailer now though, so I'd be interested to see how much more propane we'd use by leaving it on all of the time. We haven't even used one 30lb tank yet since we've had the trailer. Edit: we are always camping without hookups so fridge is strictly run by propane.

But I can leave my propane turned on safely? The fridge is running off electric as we have power here. I need to lookup how many amps my fridge runs on since we have no services at our campground next weekend. Actually not strictly true I have 3 solar panels.

I run my hot water tank for the second I unhitch to when I hook up again. You might as well kettle boil if you run it like that. It’s not what they are designed for.

Also, I ran furnace, stove, fridge, and HWH for 10 days on 3 20lbers and I still have an almost full bottle.

We showered daily (4 showers) and had zero issues.

I'm going to try leaving the hot water heater on the whole time next trip. I don't have a way to measure usage though and I don't know when I run a tank empty, I just usually resort to taking the cover off and picking up the tanks to see how heavy they are.

fridge on propane takes minimal power just a trickle to power the control board, thermostat and igniter

it was actually ona small tent trailer, it was an old unit and it was years ago, so i may have eben doing something wrong or there may have been something wrong with it.

Also everybody needs to keep in mind outdoor temp when it comes to propane usage, if its warm outside, everything will be more efficient (except the fridge) if its cold outside, its a lot more work for your furnace and water heater to keep up.

Furnace is biggest user of both propane and 12V electricity when it's cool out. I paid close attention on one long trip and I used under 1lb/day propane when it wasn't very cold out and that was fridge, stove, hot water and fridge. I use more than that now on my Camp Chef, but I'll spend 90 minutes cooking bacon and eggs in the morning . . . . . . .

Derail: .....and that's more than a pound of propane just for that one meal. (Fun Fact, 1 lb of propane has a heat content of 21,500 BTU and each burner on the camp chef uses 30,000 BTU/hr at full blast)

Got to see @nzwasp 's sick trailer. Really neat little unit, and so simple! No HWT bypass at all. No level sensors in black, grey or fresh tanks. Also have a new appreciation for the tow capability of the Toyota Highlander. Truly the Honda Fit of SUV's.

Because a Tacoma is basically a car anyway.
