Default Something's up with my car..

First off, it's a 4 cyl '04 accord, and this issue is super hit and miss. I can drive the car and it'll do it, then the next time I drive my car it runs perfectly fine. Whats more, the check engine light comes on roughly when the issue occurs, but then it'll turn back off later. It just keeps going back and forth like this. I noticed my battery posts were pretty dirty about a month ago so cleaned them off, but that didn't really help much.
Anyways, the issue is that as I drive around the electronics seem to stutter a bit. Like the radio will shut off for half a second then back on, the gauges all drop down like that also, and I can feel my power brakes stutter with it also, but only for a flash. Mechanically, the cars fine imo. So what could it be? My first thought is probably the computer's going, or perhaps a bad ground wire somewhere, but I don't know anything about cars beyond the basic mechanics. Common sense tells me the first thing would be to plug a reader into the car to read the engine code, can I do that even after the light is off (pull the most recent error)? Is it worth buying the reader, or is it just cheaper to go to the garage? (I've heard both ways).

I have no clue what the issue is but my only guess is that your alternator is toast or perhaps your battery.

If I had to bet I would bet on the alternator.

    good luck!

If it was my car, I would take a mist of water to the battery/alternator areas and see if the problem is repeatable (good to clean engine bay too once in a while).

I had an intermittent battery connection issue solved this way.

Find the code before you do any further investigating It could be many things, really - so you might as well figure out what it is trying to tell you first.

I am not sure if your codes are left in memory, but I certainly wouldn't count on it. I'd just buy a cheapie (I've used mine so many times it's paid for itself many times over) and leave it plugged in for the next time the light comes on. You could go to Auto Value as suggested, but then you rely on the light staying on which sounds unreliable.

This. Follow your negative battery cable to where it connects to the car's frame. Remove the cable here and clean/polish the contact area.

I second this. You might want to buy some sanding paper.
