Finally got my extra 200 WestJet dollars (took 2 days after my statement came). Booked direct flights to SNA for Disney this summer. Saved $160 with the companion pass, $450 with WestJet Dollars, and $140 on baggage fees for 2 bags there and back. Not bad for FYF churn. I'll probably just lock it down and won't keep it after a year though. Booking the companion pass just means that the 3 other tickets to fly with kids are overpriced (full fare) which negates any savings.
This is exactly my plan almost to a tee haha. My daughter is 38.5” tall tho so I’m just waiting until she gets to 40” before I book. Might end up being September by the time she gets there.

How do they charge the forex fee then?

I use my twem in the states constantly and there's only a single charge for the transaction, nothing for foreign exchange...unless they just give a slightly lower exchange rate to cover it

My VISA shows up as a separate charge for foreign exchange the same way my debit card does

My TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite didn't show forex charges either, but i haven't had that card since 2016

My TD Visa will show it's a foreign transaction with a little FX symbol beside the charge, and the fee is baked into the charge amount.

My Scotia cards that have no FX fees will show a FX symbol with a line crossing it out to show no FX fee.

If you google whatever cards you have + foreign transaction fee it should list the fee, which is usually 2.5%

Yeah it’s baked into the rate. Google the visa or Mastercard exchange rate for that day and you’ll see the rate you got was off by 2.5%

There don't seem to be many to choose from.

The one @flipstah posted from HSBC seems to be the best. My only concern would be what happens when RBC acquires HSBC
    The other options are:
    Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite
    Scotiabank Gold Amex
    Brim World Elite Mastercard
    Brim Mastercard
    Home Trust Preferred Visa

Anyone know anything about the Brim or Home Trust offerings?

We use the Scotia Gold AMEX for no forex. Used it in Germany a few months ago no issues. We like the AMEX since 100 scene pts = $1, so it's essentially 5% back in points on dining out and 3% points on gas fill up. Those add up quickly. However the Scotia Passport Visa Infinite comes with 6 lounge passes and also no forex...

Speaking specifically to Japan, I think we'll have to stick with MC/VISA

Hey, another question about the Triangle Select. It says you get an annual "top up" on your "largest purchase". Is that your most expensive single item, or the largest single transaction? I did actually read the website but I didn't see what it was.
So for instance, if you bought a thousand bucks worth of shit in one transaction, is that 20x ponts on the thousand, which would be something like 20x0.4% = 8% back (on top of whatever you got for that transaction originally.

If it's on a single item, it's a real nothingburger.

I'm guessing single item, but I don't know.
Pretty decent if you dropped $2k on a big set of tool chests or whatever. BBQ, lawn mower, snow blower, etc.

@ExtraSlow I have looked further and they've identified my current leader as a massive purchase of $48.
I'm quite confident that was for two hockey sticks, so that leads me to strongly believe it's largest transaction, not most expensive single item.
I'll end up spending more there and I should be able to more constitutively confirm and then update.

it was always going to happen, but I'm going to talk myself into this program. Then I'll grumble when I want to shop online, which is usually. It's going to be so emo.

I'm trying for one year because free Crave plus free $50 gift card. I doubt I can save an extra $90 in future years and I'll pull the plug.

I have home trust visa for this exact purpose, no yearly fee, no fx and worked anywhere we’ve been too. used to have car rental insurance too but they removed it a couple of years ago

tried getting the free brim visa with no fx fee as well but i think it’s no longer available

Thinking of ditching my HSBC World Elite as they weakened the points system on it recently and it's up for it's annual fee soon. Then replacing it with a Scotia Momentum® Visa Infinite* Card. Looks like pretty good cash back and a decent insurance package.
