More of a rant than anything but WJ rewards is being frustrating, spent enough in 2023 to bump My status with them another level but they took so long to process the flight they aren’t including it in my 2023 spend and put it in 2024.

Kindof a joke, doesn’t seem there is any real mechanism to dispute either.

Stuff like this has been driving me nuts with them. A few years ago they used to be so much better it wasn’t even close. That PE buyout really fucked the customer experience.

Just more and more stuff coming up with that card
I don’t have an aeroplan card so that’s why I was poking around with the Amex cobalt

I tried to use my west jet rewards last year for a vacation but everytime I tried to book a trip that showed was available, it wasn't when I went to book. Seems like it's a common problem.

Now that I've used all my west jet dollars I'll reconsider another card instead.

    Cashback is where its at

Rogers no fee card, BMO fee card and Triangle mastercard and you're good to go. Amazon card if you have Prime.

What BMO card are you referring to? Which card do you use in what situation?

I agree that CB is best. I have a Rogers World Elite (no fee) and CIBC Dividend VISA for the 4% back on gas/groceries, 2% on eating out/bills and then the Rogers card for everything else at 1.5%.

how to? say if you have aeroplan card, do they give you a cheaper option to upgrade for example? haha whether it's a basic aeroplan card or an infinite privilege one
say economy is 1500 but sir since you have an aero plan card, you can upgrade to business class for just another 1500 lol

or i guess just keep churning cards, get all the bonus thresholds and just redeem that way
but just curious the marth on economy to lay down pod, real food, watch the plebs walk by you biz upgrades, i'm guessing it's probably min 3x the price

right now aero plan offering $800 bonuses and 1600 if privilege card

or as a wiseman once said, just forget the hacking, just make an extra 10k
    don't be poor
    don't be cheap etc. etc.

Using Aeroplan cards to get points is a relatively easy way, but it does involve a lot of churning and a good income to actually spend the money required to get the bonus points thresholds

If you can get to platinum status with Westjet, you're usually in with a good shout of an upgrade from Economy to Premium or Premium to Business (can't go Eco to Bus) on a lot of the flights, I think I got an upgrade about 6/10 times including twice on the pods on their 787-9 (I did have a ~$25,000 spend on WJ flights last year though)

The pods are defo amazing though, I flew YYC-LHR a few years back and got off the flight wishing it was longer

BMO Cashback World Elite, IIRC its 5% on groceries for the first $500 each billing cycle. Same idea but 3% for gas. So for one person its pretty decent.

The non world elite Rogers MC card is now 2% cash back if you have a Rogers/Shaw mobile/internet plan. 1.5x redemption bonus if you use the cash back on your rogers bill. Seems pretty good if you're not getting hosed on your rogers contracts.
Then have BMO world elite MC just because the fee is waived. Will probably cancel the AMEX soon

At approx $675/month on groceries is the crossover where it's better value to use the CIBC Dividend Visa. The BMO card is 5% on the first $500/month then 1% thereafter vs. 4% on an annual $20,000/yr groceries + gas.

The CIBC card has better benefits like 2% on restaurants, for example.

Might have to consider the regular Roger's card as I'm not making many USD purchases these days and we do have Shaw internet.

I agree the WJ MasterCard is now terrible.
Booking with the voucher they jack the base fair so there is little to no savings anymore.

Unless you are gold or platinum the benefits are fairly limited.

Yea and if you are flying enough to be gold or platinum you basically get all the CC benefits for free anyway ( bags, companion vouchers, lounge access).

FWIW I don’t have the card I’m just salty that the shorted me my gold status and is yea I’m pleb silver.

I guess if I had the car the status lift would have solved that problem lol.

Overall I’m still happy with my Avion.

Agree the WJ moved far lower in the pecking order for us. It still pays for itself with "free" checked bags but we have switched to heavy use on the Costco MC which is getting us over $1k this year which seems bananas.

I might switch 100% to our triangle WE.

Two boys, very active family, the Sport Chek, pro hockey life, Canadian Tire dollars would go to great use.

    This card seems very good
    Anyone?
I paired this with a scotia visa infinite PP (incase they don't take amex). Definitely a very good card especially if you collect AMEX/Aeroplan and like to fly long haul business to Asia. I signed up few years ago when it had a good sign up bonus

Signed up for RBC WJ approx 1 year ago because they had a great welcome deal. Called them yesterday to cancel it before they dinged me with the yearly fee. Was hoping they would waive the YF as a 1-time gesture (I seem to recall people saying this was possible) and I would’ve kept it, but no dice. Oh well.

if you churn cards what's the optimal time from cancel and apply for a new card?
the rbc wj card is now up to $700 for new applicants, i think last year was $400

WJ bonus is a little deceiving '$300 in welcome WestJet dollars upon your first purchase, another $300 when you spend $5,000 in the first three months PLUS an additional $100 as a one-time anniversary bonus'. So best thing to do would be Get the first $600, use the companion voucher and cancel the card before the anniversary bonus.
