WJ bonus is a little deceiving '$300 in welcome WestJet dollars upon your first purchase, another $300 when you spend $5,000 in the first three months PLUS an additional $100 as a one-time anniversary bonus'. So best thing to do would be Get the first $600, use the companion voucher and cancel the card before the anniversary bonus.
    yes sir

    also

    TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card
Earn up to $1,200 in value^ including up to 40,000 Aeroplan points1 and no Annual Fee for the first year1. Conditions Apply. Account must be approved by March 4, 2024.

this one looks good too, year 1 fee waived and 40k aeroplan pts basically $800 value

Shame you can’t fly anywhere on Air Canada without going through Pearson.

I don’t care how many free points I get

Yep, no amount of rewards can make that worthwhile.

waaaay back in the day, when air miles were the normal reward points, I had a bunch, and I wanted to fly to comox, and that flight existed on whatever airline was partnered with Air miles at the time. So I called in to air miles, and found out they only "offered" some seats on some flights, regardless ofo carrier Had to fly to Victoria that trip to use my points, which was unhandy Pissed me off.

I switched to Avion points after that, which were any seat, any flight. Now I'm westjet, which yeah, isn't what it used to be, but at least the points (WJD) can be used on any flight and even on vacation packages.

Anyway, none of that relates to the discussion at hand, but well, there it is.

if you churn cards what's the optimal time from cancel and apply for a new card?
the rbc wj card is now up to $700 for new applicants, i think last year was $400
I think it’s at least 1 year before RBC will give you a welcome bonus for the same card that you canceled. Maybe even 2 years. I’d be curious if anyone knows for sure.

Each is specific about when they deem you new. It'll say something in the terms like "no active account in the last XX days/months."

The real question is why are you flying Air Canada anywhere internationally? I'm in LA now so I have much more options, and you can always reposition if it's worth it to you. I just booked LAX-SIN direct on SQ, non stop for 87.5k AP. Granted you need to plan your vacations unless you wait for T-14 then it would just be a gamble.

IMO WJ is only good if you live in Calgary and don't travel outside US/CAN/Mexico?

Buy the gift cards alongside your groceries. Rumor was AMEX was reviewing grocery store purchases at perfectly even numbers awhile back. You can get Shell gift cards or whatever and use it to fuel up, optimizing 5x points as well.

AMEX is the only card processer that sends transaction data that includes items in the sale to AMEX. I don't think they need to even see even numbers, they see itemized info if the merchant provides it.

Wow does that gift card hack w/ AMEX work?

Big if true as they say.

It appears my existing Scotia gold AMEX gives 6x points at safeway and sobeys

It's worked every time I've done it. I think it was on redflagdeals where they mentioned some transactions were being reviewed. There's also another way to optimize the 5x fuel purchases but I have only tried it at 7-11 with Petro Canada pumps. If you pay at the pump, it's a gasoline purchase and the merchant is Petro. But if you go into 7-11 and pre-pay using their 7-11 POS machine, the merchant will be 7-11, thus 5x points. You just have to ensure you are going to use the entire amount you pre-pay for as getting the difference back is a pain.

Gift card hack is a bit more stream lined. Just test it out once or twice and see.

I have had no issues with AMEX at all since I first signed up with them.
