IMO, I'd be more worried about the transmissions than the tow ratings. The vast majority of 4.0s had the 42RE which I would never use to tow anything, ever. '96-'98 5.2s had a 44RE which is somewhat better but still a little iffy. '93-'95 5.2 and '98 5.9 had the strongest transmissions, 46RH and 46RE respectively, which are OK for towing provided they've been maintained well and installing a shift kit will improve their longevity considerably. All of them benefit hugely from a good transmission cooler.

well the tow package includes coolers and everything else. so trick is find one with that package.

the boat will probably be 5500lbs max. i would be just doing pine coulee for the most part. so flat and short trips

Just wanted to thank everyone for their input and help in this thread. I had my eyes peeled for an XJ Cherokee, but ended up finding this beast for a steal of a deal! and well within my budget.

Yes, she needs some love, but overall for the price I am very impressed. It's a '90 SR5 V6 with an auto trans.

Welcome to the dark side! Excellent choice. You already have 31's (and can fit 32's) and did not require the lift an XJ needs. Loose the running boards and she is ready to roll. Congrats.

Thanks, I plan to remove the running boards shortly. The 31's on the truck right now are pretty much toast, so I am currently deciding what tires to pick up for winter.

Why was a Wrangler/TJ/YJ never suggest anyway? Tough to beat those for offroad use...

Damn 4runners and sagging rear springs.

Easy lift is rear springs and a torsion bar crank, or a key swap.

I've had a 1st and 2nd gen, both sagged in the back and were in launch mode lol.

I wouldnt go any bigger than the 31's, these trucks are stupid slow and bad on gas lol.

Niiiice. Pretty good condition 2nd gen, any mechanical issues or future plans?

I think pretty much any old 4Runner will have a sagging rear. Mine sags roughly as much as yours. These guys will have their own little quirks that you will be accustomed to.

if you're going to tow... get a long bed truck with a strong frame and a big rear axel
    V8 and a beefy transmission

if you need a 4x4 I'd go with a SUV and would go for a TJ, ZJ, XJ, Pathfinder, Xterra, 4runner

but would not tow with those

I picked up this girl a few weeks back as my winter wheels, in great shape inside and out, no mechanical issues and runs great. Paid $1700 so I felt I did ok

So far just some maintenance and a new muffler in her future, it's damn loud right now. Have a few small plans beyond that but probably not until after the new year.

I'm sure you'll get some good money for them if you post them in the Saskatchewan Kijiji
