I ordered an engagement ring off blue nile about a month ago. Service was good. Shipped from the states but as noted you don't pay anything extra when it comes in.

Let me clarify, he asked me for a bottle of water so he could mix his protein powder.

I bought a diamond from them and it sent it back. I wasn’t in the market for a flawless diamond, but something that was “eye clean”… I picked one out, called them up and they offered to have a gemologist do a visual inspection for me prior to putting the purchase through. I agreed to this and the gemologist came back saying it was clan to the naked eye… I figured great, send it out.

It shows up the next day and is very much not clean to the naked eye. I don’t know what their so called gemologist was smoking but it was very obviously flawed. I called them up to return it and they were easy enough to deal with on the phone at first. I figured no big deal… except:

A: I’m stuck paying the return shipping on their shitty misrepresented product (overnighting an insured package worth thousands of dollars costs like $200).

B: They charged my credit card in Canadian dollars but refunded me in US dollars. Between the exchange rate fluctuation and the 2.5% foreign exchange fee Visa charges I was out several hundred more dollars… I called them to ask them about this and they were certain they refunded me in Canadian dollars. I sent them my statements and was tracking them down for weeks trying to get the issue resolved until I finally had to open a claim with Visa to have the charges reversed.

Some people swear by Blue Nile but they can suck my ass! I ended up paying a little more locally but having the ability to see the product prior to purchase was worth it for me in the end.

This is the main issue with buying from the internet, but if you are doing your homework, you can find sites that will provide you ASET images, and give you the same pricing as Blue Nile.

What were the specs of the diamond you returned?

Got just what I wanted, and from every ring we tried on it was 5-6k cheaper. Even through a diamond wholesaler I got it for thousands cheaper.

gotta say, blue nile was pretty good. Easy to find what you want, and shipping was pretty quick too.

At the end of the day what really makes a huge difference are the things that none of us understand about the grading of diamonds (unless you are a gemologist or own a jewelery store and are bidding on individual stones).

The G.I.A. (Gemological Institute of America) system of ranking diamonds has changed significantly over the years - classifying certain diamonds based on characteristics that can create the illusion of value based on depth %, table %, Girdle rank and overall dimensions. On top of this, GIA also has branches in countries where classifying diamonds can be a shady, easily corrupted system (such as Bangkok, Johannesburg, and Mumbai) the so called "independent gemologists" will verify certain aspects of the diamond based on these GIA criteria - but what you end up with (in terms or wholesale value) could be completely out to lunch.

Justing can probably clarify these points, see that he is in the business - my understanding of the above has come from hours of internet research and speaking to a family friend, who happens to be a wholesaler, in the USA who has dealt with the stones people buy online.

I'm not saying you won't get a decent looking diamond shopping online - what I am saying is that purchasing and negotiating locally will most likely provide you with better bang for you buck and peace of mind.

1.81 carat, F colour, very good cut, VS1 clarity.

Ya thanks, she loves it and that's all I was going for.
