Default Gasoline sales halted in California.

    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...567209038.html

    Dun dun duhhhhh....

"Valero Energy Corp. said Thursday it has stopped selling gasoline into the California spot market because of a product shortage resulting from a spate of refinery outages in the state.

Valero, the largest refiner in the U.S., took the unusual step after accidents and maintenance have caused shutdowns at several California refineries"

That refinery fire back a few months ago is now coming to bite them in the ass. Gasoline in California is up 9 cents overnight.

By 91 I'm assuming you mean what we call premium? What is 87 (regular)?

    Canadian Gas prices are ridiculous.

We need to start refining our own oil asap.

I've heard so many people say the exact same thing. Can anyone in O&G englighten us as to why this happens?

Is it because of various taxes?

Gas prices high due to lack of local refineries, lack of local refineries because of ...

    http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/stor...ng-canada.html

    Coles:
    $7B to build refinery
60 refineries on Gulf Coast are idle
Not enough local demand for refinery in Canada

    ...

Not in the O&G industry, but IMO, It's because there are more profits to move the oil out via pipeline to US/Asian refineries.

Taxes are a huge part of it. A quick google turned up this:

Canadians pay about 33% in combined taxes on average on the price of fuel, and Americans pay about 11%, Canadian gas guru Preet Banarjee reported a while back.
    http://blogs.marketwatch.com/canada/...-higher-taxes/

I'm sure there are better references out there but I don't have the time to search for them now.

Kenny is completely right in that the margins on refineries are slim and new ones haven't been built for ages. In fact, the ones in the Southern US even re-tooled to handle heavy crudes (West Canadian Select is relatively heavy compared to WTI). So, we end up shipping crude South and then shipping the distillates back up North to us. Impractical? Probably. But given the capital costs to build new refineries and close up old ones, it probably makes sense to continue shipping to the south for refining.
