Default One car broken into every hour

While many beyond members are busy working in their garages on their pride and joy one thing is often overlooked and that is vehicle security. You may spend all winter working on your projects but all that hard work can dissapear the moment you walk away from it. Although there is nothing you can do to guarentee your vehicle is not stolen, there are some common sense practices will help reduce your risk:

    1. Lock your doors
    2. Keep valuables out of sight
    3. Park in well lit/high traffic areas
    4. Get an alarm (2 way if possible)
    5. Don't advertise your stereo parts on your backwindows!

Based on Calgary Police Service statistics that were recently released, during last year there was a car break and enter every hour. Theives had a field day in the community of Connaught where there was nearly 300 incidents throughout the year. The following is a breakdown by community (including campus lots and transit lots):

I think its common sense. If you have a nice looking car, no matter what area you are in. Someone is gonna try to steal it.
So your best bet is to leave it in a garage that doesnt have a secondary door to access.
If you have one with a secondary door, turn up the sensitivy and get "THE CLUB". A theif will take a second thought about stealin a car with an alarm and a "club".

the numbers are kinda deceptive... because some neighbourhoods are considerably larger than others...

would be interesting to see how many cars are stolen per 1000 people or something

i thoguht the same thing when i saw this in the paper a couple days ago, for example dover:130 is a HUGE neighbourhood, it goes from peigan to 17th ave and from deerfoot to 52nd ave (i think)

compared to some of the newer communities that have maybe 200 houses.

If i ever catch someone trying to break into my car, I won't bother calling the cops...that's all I gotta say about that.

Insurance varies depending on neighborhood right? So that means the Bayview and Pumphill people are paying next to nothing for car insurance. But I guess they make up for it in house insurance LOL.

The best thing to do is keep stuff out of site.

My cavalier was broken into near the U of A because I left a 24 CD case on the seat. The fuckers broke my window ($175), took some CDs and a paycheck from my part time job (WTF?).

Anyhoo, keep your stuff out of sight and they'll probably pass your car by. Nothing to see, nothing to steal.

just buy a $1 flashing red led from RS hook it up to a switch and turn the switch on when you leave your car... any theive with half a brain wont even chance touching a car with a flashign red light in it, because there is always another car 2 houses down without a flashing red light

Insurance varies according to geographical region not residential neighborhoods... otherwise people living in newly developed areas would be paying next to nothing for insurance

Also, for all you apartment residents out there, never park your car in the underground, "secure" parking. Most car break-ins happen in underground parking.

think about it, if you were stealing stuff, would you rather chance it with a car with the light in it, or walk 5 steps to the next car without a red light?

yeah I used to live in Acadia, tons of prowlings and it's not really a rich neighbourhood.

Fairview on the other hand, bling bling. with the bowling alley and the perfect pizza.
