" Amanda Todd, a Vancouver-area teenager who posted a story to YouTube last month about being cyber-bullied, was found dead Wednesday night in Coquitlam, Canada. Authorities believe she committed suicide.

Amanda's video tells a heart-wrenching story of the bullying she was subjected to -- both online and off. "In 7th grade," she begins, sharing her message on cue cards, "I would go with friends on webcam [to] meet and talk to new people." At one point, a stranger flattered her into flashing the camera.

One year later, a man contacted her on Facebook, threatening to send around the picture of her topless "if [she] don't put on a show." Terrifyingly, the stranger knew everything about her: her address, school, friends, relatives, and the names of her family members. Soon, her naked photo had been forwarded "to everyone."

Amanda developed anxiety, depression, and anxiety disorders, she says in the video, followed by a path into drugs and alcohol.

She changed schools and found a new group of friends in an effort to leave behind the bullies. Then the man created a Facebook profile, using her uncensored photo as his profile picture. "Cried every night, lost all my friends and respect people had for me... again... then nobody liked me," she wrote in the video.

It is unfortunate a few mistakes could lead to suicide.

I know these stories happen all the time, but it is crazy to see how bad cyber bullying can be.

RIP. Growing up with depression can be exceptionally difficult, and when you feel like many (or in her case, all) of your peers are against you it's pretty hard to endure. Such a shame she felt this was her only way out...

It was ever since that one homosexual did it to vent out his bullying issues. I think people being bullied saw the success of how he posted that and later came out okay, so maybe they think if they post a video like that to vent out their problems they will come out okay.

That is just my guess but I know if I was in that position where I'm all alone and I saw how someone got out of it, i'd probably think it may work for me too.

It is just sad that because she flashed some guy over webcam she gets this, I know it was a stupid mistake and all but i'm pretty sure when I was in grade 7 half the girls flashed their tits to someone via webcam.

What makes this even worse is seeing the "bullies" going to her r.i.p page and rip her apart even after death is just disgusting.

At the end of the day it is no surprise as these are the same people that are or have been a bully at some point in their lives.

We do things to each other that are so terrible and evil, whether it be cold blooded murder or abusing someone over (thank fuck we have this yet no knowledge of our own existence) social media and internet until they kill themselves... Of all suicides to publish and glamorize, it's this one. This will just make all the emo kids get more attention by killing themselves hoping for this much notoriety. The bleeding hearts in this thread makes me laugh, since we've all cyberbullied here and there.

A bit harsh, but I do agree with you to an extent.

What the guy did seems to be illegal, why not go to the police and try and end the harrassment, rather than run away from the issue?

I agree with this, mostly since it happened to me as well for pretty much the same time period, except it was to the point where I did think that taking my own life was the only way out. I was lucky that I had the support there to help me when I needed it most, especially since this was when the school system's approach to it was to ignore it and pretend that it either didn't happen in their school or that it was simply one person taking joking too personally.

It has only been in the last few years that people have realixzed that bullying is an actual issue and is not part of growing up or as the school liked put it, "Boy will be boys".

@Rage: I agree that suicide is taking the easy way out and is only going to hurt more people and solves nothing. But the fact is, at that point in time, you don't think about that aspect of it, the only focus is making the pain stop and for some people it gets them to that point.

You can't expect everyone if the world to have the same thick skin and shrug it off. It is really impossible to speak to her frame of mind at the time, but the reality is more than just attention seeking plays a role in things like this. Puberty years bring on hormones and chemical changes within the body, insane peer pressure, self awareness (positive and/or negative) etc, but just saying she is a coward is the cop out.

A lot of the issues are with the parents of both the kids bullying and getting bullied. If you raise your kids to be assholes, they are going to be assholes. If you have kids being bullied and they are shrinking inside themselves, you need to be strong for them and try and help raise them up.

You may have no sympathy for her and that is completely your right, but that still doesn't make it acceptable to bully kids, and essentially calling any bullied kid who doesn't know how to handle it a pussy isn't going to help...

Only thing that boggles my mind is that the cops didn't go after the guy in question for posession of child porn. Beyond that, sympathy's minimal for anyone that kills themselves.

When I first moved to Canada, I was a geeky Chinese kid, spoke English with an accent and was bullied by white kids non stop. Beat up, had kids chase me down with their dogs, called names, much worse than tits on the Internet. Instead of killing myself I made friends with black kids that kicked the white kids asses. Fight fire with fire. I'm sure a young attractive white girl can get shit done for herself a lot easier than a geeky Chinese kid.

Even today, I get ridiculed with my cul de sac pedo picture plastered all over the net. Lots of anonymous hate comments. Don't see me wanting to go off myself. Sure, some people aren't thick skinned like me, and can't handle it. So does glamorizing it make things better? It serves 2 purposes, makes hipocrates feel better about ourselves when we pour out some sympathy, and makes other emo kids want to do the same thing.
