What the union is doing is both pointless and stupid, they're just trying to make a fuss because public perception is that Zellers was purchased by Target, which it wasn't. It seems silly to me to suggest that someone who leases a building is under some sort of obligation to re-hire any staff that worked in what ever was there before...

    Typical union entitlement crybabies.

This is AB ... NOT BC ... in BC there would be a mass riot, and the NDP would jump on the big labour bandwagon in a second .... esp if they are elected.

(couldnt resist a BC jab, spent 26 years living in that province)

I fully agree with Target on this. The Union is being absurd with the entire argument, I don't understand how they think they have a single leg to stand on in it....other than trying to polarize public perceptions for their own gain. Target should just open their stores and then file a lawsuit agains the Union for running a smear campaign.

Unions in Canada are obsolete and it is complete bs that if you join certain companies you are essentially forced to become a member of a union. Most employees that have been on a union strike tell me that any gains the might make will never make up for the time off during the strike. Zellers was a dump and why would you spend the money to expand your company into a new market only to hire all the staff from a failed company?

Why does everyone bitch about unions so much? its better having somebody trying to make a career and is actually concerned about their job working there rather than some snot nosed brat out of high school who is going to just move on to the next job the second his boss gives him flak

The union isn't completely good, but you also have to remember these jobs are low skills and the people working there don't have any sort of job security because of that. Of the best job I could get is at a walmart, zellers, target etc I'd try just as much as the next guy to get unionized so I have some level of job security.

What's really sad is that the people who will end up working in Canadian Targets will likely take their work for granted (especially ones in AB). Customer service will suck and Target will just end up being another Zellers. Who knows.

I was in the US just a few weeks back and customer service was EXEMPLARY there. It didn't matter where I went. At a Walmart in Seattle, EVERY worker stopped to greet me and asked if I need help. With a smile. My dad too his car to Honda to get the tires balanced. They completely washed the car, bugs and all, from our road trip! A freakin' Honda! At the Nordstrom Rack in Spokane, I told the (older) lady at the check out how I was Canadian, and she proceeded to thank me as a Canadian for keeping them in business.

It's just amazing how much you value your job and care for what you do when it's at stake and how loyal you can be to a company. I'll bet they're also making far less than the privileged, stuck up associates here too. Sad.
You have a couple of photos that are great... you must be very good at photoshop!

Sounds like HBC is dropping the ball fucking with these employee's not Target.

I could be wrong, but isn't Zellers owned (or was owned) by The Bay, Home Sense, etc?

So why doesn't HBC move said employees to another store (i.e. to The Bay down the hall at Chinook/Market)?

... Im really confused by this whole buy-out
So Target bought the Zellers name and they are going to keep both, and slowly transform Zellers to Target names?

Here in Winnipeg, Zellers is pretty big (in comparison to what i remember in Calgary) - have grocery stores integrated in, etc..
And they don't look like they're going anywhere, Calgary i remember a tonn of close-out sales in their stores

look at when HBC purchased Woodwards. HBC didn't buy it for the company, it wanted the good locations. If I remember correctly it didn't keep the staff it hired for the new company

Target didn't buy the Zellers name. They only obtained the rights to the lease(essentially a real estate transaction). They didn't obtain the name/inventory/staff or anything to do with the operation of Zellers.

HBC is closing off Zellers stores and liquidating all the inventory/assets. Target bought the rights to those locations and actually sold some off to Walmart. Knowing Walmart's history with unions (ie: when they shut down that store that unionized in Quebec), they probably told the union to fuck off.

Once you replace the name "Target" with any other company that may have bought the space, such as "Home Depot" or "Future Shop" you realize how ridiculous the union demand actually is.
