Default Zellers Workers Protesting to "Protect Their Rights"

    http://www.calgaryherald.com/busines...339/story.html

As they brace for the closure of two popular Zellers store locations next week, longtime Zellers workers say their new potential employer is forcing them to reapply for jobs they’ve had for decades.

American-based retailer Target is converting several existing Zellers locations in Calgary, with stores at Chinook Centre and Market Mall already closed and under reconstruction.

Protests will be held at Zellers locations in Forest Lawn and Signal Hill on Saturday, with closure of those stores set for Monday.

The union representing Zellers workers says Target has told staff, many with more than 30 years of experience, that they will have to reapply for their same jobs, in the same locations.

No specifics have been provided for starting pay and benefits, but workers fear that because Target is a non-unionized shop, salary and benefits will have lower standards.

“Our workers are devastated. They have committed their entire lives to one company and then, bang, suddenly it means nothing,” said Doug O’Halloran, president of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 401.

Lisa Gibson, spokeswoman for Target Canada, said Target will provide former employees with initial interviews, but that no one’s job is guaranteed.

“We are a completely different brand, and we are looking for people who fit into our Target brand.

“Our goal is to make sure we have the best team in place, and in order to do that we need flexibility.”

But O’Halloran says Target is refusing to respect the loyalty, experience and labour rights of Zellers workers.

“Alberta needs good retail jobs to strengthen our communities and to create more fairness for working families,” said O’Halloran.

“By refusing to respect the rights of Zellers workers, Target is telling Alberta that it’s not interested in being a positive force for our province and the future of our economy.

“We need to send a strong message to Target and that starts with taking a stand, and that is why we are calling on all our friends and neighbours to join us at the protests on Saturday.”

Saturday’s protests will occur simultaneously at noon at the Signal Hill Zellers, at 5696 Richmond Road S.W., and the Forest Lawn Zellers, at 5115 17th Ave. S.E.

The remaining Zellers stores in Calgary — in Sunridge and Shawnessy — will be closed within the next few months.

The United Food and Commercial Workers Union is Alberta’s largest private-sector union and leading retail workers’ organization.

Coles notes, union is going to get the shaft because Target doesn't have any obligation to let the 60 year old making $30/hour who can't figure out how to give $0.98 in change in under 20 minutes.

Me? I like it. Target has the right to employ or not employ whoever they want in their new stores.

^^This...I hated shopping at Zellers because of the customer service. I did hear a rumor though that the majority of positions at Target will be part-time with a max of 32 hrs per week to avoid paying benefits.

I don't see why they are protesting, Target is an entirely separate company and doesn't need to hire them. I'm really confused what "rights" Target is not respecting by not blindly hiring people who might not fit what they are looking for in an employee.

As for the 32 hours a week max rumor, that's the company's right to determine how they staff up. Nothing wrong with that.

I also see zero reason why a retail worker needs to belong to a union.

If that's what it takes to keep prices low, I'm all for it. Working at target is kinda lie working a McDonald's... It's really a job best suited for high school kids. And for those who complain about it-- c'mon, you're working at fucking target! Get off your ass and make something happen for yourself if you don't like it!

The union is protesting because...I don't know...lol. They're basically being busted by the fact that Zeller's is ceasing to exist...I like it.

I also agree that people that treat retail jobs as though they should be able to do them for the rest of their lives are misguided.

The great thing about the free market - if you don't like your job offer from Target, you can refuse it and apply to do the same job at Walmart.

Why on earth does a seperate company need to hire old employees of another company?

Maybe the union should realize that their ridiculous demands probably contributed to Zellers eventual demise.

Good on Target for re-assesing the staff and their salaries.

This kind of clarifies what happened:

    http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2012/08...n_1822223.html

    - Target bought the Zellers locations from HBC only
    - Target did not acquire any of the assets, branding, inventory, technology, staff, etc.
    - There is no continuity in the business from Zellers to Target
    - It will take 6-9 months to change the location into a Target store
    - Zellers workers were given pink slips by HBC

I may be wrong because I read this quickly... but it appears to me like a transaction where they owner of a business lays off all the employees, sells all of the store assets off, and then sells the building off. It just so happens the new owners of the buildings operate in the same industry and the union believes they are entitled to keep their job.

I believe so. Basically what target did was buy a bunch of long-term low price leases. They didn't want any of zeller's assets other than the leases.

I feel bad for people who are gonna be taking a massive pay cut or lose their jobs BUT it's their own fault for working there 30+ years and thinking that somehow entitles them to $30/hour. I don't think $30/hour is far fetched for how much they were making as I knew bakery staff at Superstore 10 years ago who worked there ~15 year and made $25/hour.

Where the fuck does it say anywhere that people working at Zellers are making $30 an hour?

Target holds no obligations, which is fine. And the union can and should try to help it's members transition over to the new banner even if it's a non-unionized employer.

The union's only goal in all of this is to try to force it's way in to Target, and if you really think they give a shit about helping workers "transition" to a non union environment then I recently discovered you are a descendant of royalty and if you'll just send me 50'000 dollars I'll provide you with your 100 million dollar inheritance.
