I told someone once that Chinook was "in the south" and he got really mad at me for being so pedantic.
    He probably lives in Legacy.

Yo bro, are you from that goat Calgary car forum that get salty over lawn care, land rovers and circumcisions? That's straight fire.

My father-in-law is turning 80, and he is originally from the Highlands.
I’d like to get him a nice bottle of Scotch.
I’m considering the Glenfarclas Family Cask lineup but have never tried it before.

When ever he is at our place he normally goes for the Balvenie 21-Year-Old PortWood and he likes that.

I was wondering if anyone could provide some feedback on this.

    Thanks in advance!

    Couple angles to approach this.

Both Balvenie and Glenfarclas are Speyside distilleries. The port wood isn't common but a little more available than previously, and the Glenfarclas family casks are genuinely fantastic.

Or go with a Highland distillery. One of my favourites is Edradour, who recently released a 25 YO option. I haven't tried it yet but the 21 YOs I have tried were wonderful and with the wine finishes have a bit of a twist (like the Portwood, it's fairly unique to a degree).

I have previous killed a bottle of the Glenfarclas 21 and it was decent but I found it a bit underwhelming. I am currently working my way through the 21yo Balvenie Portwood and it is absolutely stellar. If you like port wood finished scotches, it's a dandy for sure. The Glenfarclas 21 just isn't quite as good to me. Having had bottles of both, the Glenfarclas I tried to love, but really I only liked it if that makes sense. I just don't find myself reaching for their offerings when other options are on the table at a similar level. Not bad... Just not as stellar. Of course different tastes between palettes matter so he may love that one.

What budget are you trying to buy at?

If he is a highland guy and wanted to savour something really nice and reasonably under budget (probably find for $600/$800 range), I had a bottle of Glengoyne 25 that I thoroughly enjoyed. It was lovely! Not as malty as the Balvenie and Glenfarclas offerings, but along with an amazing nose, on the palette it is loaded with really thick syrupy fruits and finishes with gentle spice. I wish I took more time to drink that bottle but it was so good I went back to it often.

Damn... Reminiscing on that bottle now I want to go buy another!

I do have the Glengoyne 25 and he liked the Balvenie more than the Glengoyne.
That's why I was looking at Glenfarclas

I just did a Glenfarclas tasting at Craft Cellars a few weeks ago.
    Big fan.
We tasted multiple years of the family casks.

If you're looking for anything I recommend stopping in at Craft Cellars.
They have multiple choices for high end Glenfarclas.

Would tend to agree here, their core lineup isn't anything I've particularly gone 'wow' to, it's just not my thing. Even KWM has an exclusive 15 YO and I would actually turn down a glass of it after trying it twice now! However, their Family Casks are quite nice and not bad value considering the ages of some of them.

The Glentauchers KWM cask is an unapologetic sherry bomb - I think it's better than the Glendronach 21 YO. Another I'd throw on your radar Bob is the Glenallachie 18 YO but supply is nearly zero.

Back to @ganesh question and budget, this would be my strong suggestion.

    @msommers , thanks this.
I ended up getting him a 1997 S22 and he thoroughly enjoyed it.

Maybe I will get one for myself from KWM

I assume it’s absolutely nothing like that, as it’s peated… and that’s gross, also very odd for Balvenie

This won't assault your mouth like Laphroaig but it's not my style.
