Default General Contractor for Big Job?

    Maybe someone can recommend somebody...

We have a big reno job that we want to do. It includes:

    - Adding a bathroom in our basement, including plumbing.
    - Drywall work, Add Ceiling, Paint in Basement, possibly fix some foundation cracks if need be.
    - Remodel laundry room and furnace room a bit.
    - New flooring in basement.
    - Complete 3 piece bathroom remodel on main floor!
    - Tile work in both bathrooms, and front porch, back porch of house

We want to hire a general contractor to help us plan and then handle all the work, subcontracting, etc so that we just pay one guy one fee and it all gets done very fast. Not keen to have 5 or 6 contractors or split up the work.

Anyone know someone who can handle such a big job? What should I be asking them? etc.

I know the owners, and they're pretty committed to doing quality work. They're NOT cheap though, but you definitely get what you pay for. They also don't usually take jobs under 10-15k if I remember correctly, but from what you're saying it sounds like you will be over that.

Yeah, it sounds like you're more towards 30k right off the bat.

Just remember one thing - get up to three companies to price it, be up front with each of them that you are doing that, make your decision based on pricing/reputation/personal comfort with contractor/etc., prepare for a 5-10% cost overrun but insist you're made aware of changes to contract pricing BEFORE they occur and lastly but not least - ONCE YOU'VE DONE ALL THAT DON'T QUIBBLE THE COST AND BE A PAIN IN THE ASS AND PAY YOUR DAMN BILLS.

make sure whomever you choose can show you examples of the work they've been involved with. ie. paint, drywall, etc.

I can't stress this enough. If they aren't hiring people who are experienced in a trade, but still just doing that trade, you're going to end up with shit.

Last thing you need is a painter touching up your drywall, a framer, doing your tiling, etc.

sounds nuts, but the smaller the company, the more you'll see one person wearing many hats.

I'd talk to Dave_45 (?), he's in the business as a tiler. Trades people know the inside scoop on contractors.
