It's called smart parenting. My daughter is 14 and isn't allowed to drink pop without permission.

    ...and yes she listens.

To the guy that drinks 2 Monster drinks a day, quit fooling yourself.

14 isn't exactly diaper stage. If this girl is anything like me and my friends were, she is independent and trying to do her own thing without her parents. When I was in high school around that age, we used to crush caffeine and ephedrine and snort them to get buzzed (that was before we could get real drugs of course). Of course my parents didn't know about that nor would they condone it, but I think it's pretty normal for kids to do crap like that. Doesn't mean they have bad parents.

Normal if you are a fucking retard.

Thank you. I don't always agree with 89coupe, but when I do, he hits the nail on the head. I've never even HEARD of anyone doing that while I was in middle school. Some people's children...

While the parents may not have direct control over their hellspawn, they can certainly work to instill a certain moral/value based compass in their lives. Just because most parents fail miserably at this, doesn't mean it won't work.

Of course, 89coupe's daughter is probably still getting railroaded by 3 dudes at a time, but THAT is for that other thread

So you don't trust your teenager to make a judgement call as to if she should have a can of coke?

    This!

I should have expanded on my last post. The parents knew that their daughter had a pre-existing condition. They should have done everything in their power to educate her on how it would affect her. Obviously they knew she shouldn't be drinking energy drinks, I don't think any kid should be let alone adults.

    YUP.

If your kid still did stupid things after telling them the consequences, then so be it.

    You have done your best.

Best parents produces independent, educated, well-rounded offsprings.

Not letting your 14 YEAR OLD decide if she should drink pop or not sounds like Helicopter parenting to me... and believing that she doesn't do it when you're not around is even more hilarious.

Sounds to me like you can't teach your kid how to make the right decisions (at least not well enough to trust her in doing so) so you ban everything.

Let me guess, You're going to put a gps in her car that tracks her speed and where-abouts too?

Don't see how that qualifies as "good parenting." More to it then being a babysitter.

    It's called respect.

We are her parents, she asks us if its ok.

A good kid brought up right will show his/her parents respect and value their opinions and guidance.

Shame on parents who don't offer that to their kids.

Respect is treating your parents well and deciding life based on their teachings.

I think you have that confused with 'control'.

    Thank you.

I don't see "respect" in a teenager asking their parents for "guidence" with such major life decisions as deciding if they should have a can of sprite or a cup of water.

You should be able to teach her the consequences of drinking pop and she should be smart enough at 14 to make the correct choices, or make the wrong choices and learn from her mistakes.

No I'm not confused, you are. Maybe sit down with your parents and have them explain it to you.

    Exactly.

Last time I checked, I don't think I have to ask them to cross the street.

Nah, they're too busy living their lives to be wasted with me asking about respect. I already do.

Of course, but its not something we encourage. She gets homemade lunches everyday, and everyday we cook healthy meals.

    We are not Natzi's lol

She is a straight A student.

    Volunteers at two jobs

    Studies 2-3 hours a night

Has her CPR & babysitting certificates.

Overall an amazing daughter any parent would be proud of.

Good to hear. That's the important part, really.

I don't have kids so I'm not telling you to change anything because what do I know? Just merely stating an opinion and I will leave it at that

    +1.

If you exercise control over things as small as soda at that age the child isn't able to develop the ability to properly analyze the situation and consequences of her actions. What happens when she's at a party and you aren't there to confirm whether or not its okay to do drugs? All you've done is taught her to listen to others and her friends are all saying yes.

When I was a kid I decided it would be awesome if I got one of those huge big gulps and a giant package of junior mints for lunch. Ended up throwing up and developing a massive headache, all my mom did was point out what I had eaten and what had happened as a result, I always made sure I got a proper lunch after that, even when my friends would make less healthy alternatives.
