A federal court is ordering Canada's internet service providers to block websites for a company selling pirated television online, deeming that such a move wouldn't infringe on freedom of expression or net neutrality.

If there's one thing that always works, it's tighter government control of information.

Psssh, just use 1.6 gbit/sec 5G every block or so - run the biggest IoT that the big players can't control.

How about they order telcos and ISPs to block number spoofing, and phishing.

Seriously. The amount of calls this time of the year about the CRA and IRS giving me their 2nd and 3rd warning about court orders is insane!

Is pirated television actually information or is it entertainment? Information is something that has a factual basis where as most television series are fictional in nature. Sports, documentaries and Judge Judy could possibly considered informational in nature, Friends and Star Wars certainly are not.
    Will fuck off, again.

They're kinda already doing this. Well, doing it poorly. Caller ID information that doesn't follow the proper number formats will get blocked. Spoofs still goes through lol.

Honestly, I don't know if they don't just block spoofed numbers, or if there's actually no way to validate that a number is spoofed. I'm guessing the latter.

So does this mean we will all be forced to use Wechat and have the government tracking our social credit scores?

Pretty much the latter, it would take a massive revamping of the mechanisms for passing along caller ID in every toll and central office in North America. They were designed to simply trust what they receive and pass it down the line. When you mix cloud phone systems in the where you connect to your Alberta phone system from Uzbekistan over the internet, from a telephony standpoint those calls originate from the voice gateway hooked up to copper Telus phone lines in Alberta.

Its not entirely a bad idea to work on raising your FICO credit score (basically your score with US banking system). Its also not a bad idea work on your Chinese social credit score (pretty much the exact same thing) As it will directly affect how much you can borrow and how much you can default on without someone coming and threatening to break thumbs.

Anyone who says that Chinas social credit system is bad, but says nothing bad about FICO is simply uninformed.
