    Default Remembrance Day...

Hey everyone...I hope that everyone is having a great weekend despite the less than stellar weather we are having here in Calgary...(except for you skiers and boarders haha)

I met someone earlier today...he is the grandfather of a friend of mine. And well when I was just dropping something off to her home she asked me to come in to meet her grandfather who normally lives in the United Kingdom, but due to health reasons had to move back in with his family here. And he is a GREAT man, totally funny, commanded respect but in a passive like grandfatherly way (if that makes sense) and SO full of life...in the few hours or so that I sat and had coffee with him he shared a couple of stories that just absolutely blew my mind. Things that if I was his age when subjected to would have certainly made me crawl into the fetal position and cry in a bunker until I passed out...

So, I just wanted to take a moment out of my day to start a thread here for recognizing our past and current soldiers. I know there are a few of you that have or are currently serving in the Canadian Armed Forces (whichever branch that be for you)...some of you that have family and friends serving and some of you that have lost family members due to war(s).

I thank you all for all you do, if you are just pushing paper in an office or out there in harms way protecting our rights....

Yeah, I won't lie I do enjoy the day off to do whatever I want and I know that it does get taken lightly by a lot of people out there. Even in school when we had veteran soldiers come in to talk to our classes and assemblies, while observing the moment of silence at 11:11...it was just meh to me and that is what it was....

But after today...it just seemed to resonate with me a little bit more...

And again...I thank you for letting me live in a country where I have rights and freedoms...

    Thanks for the story!

I'm watching the coverage by CTV. Pretty well done.

Yeah I've always done a ton to commend the soldiers.
    Great thread!

I've always been blown away by those who dont understand nor value the importance of today. Some couldn't care less about the soldiers who died.

Yet it was the sacrifice the soldiers made that gives them the freedom to think that way. Which is yet another concept that they dont understand.

watching band of brothers... one of the few pieces of cinema that really gets to me. In memory of those who fought to give us what we have.

Great post, thanks for sharing that.

My Dad was a WW2 vet. He was 17 when he joined. I can't imagine a kid today doing something like this. My son is 17 now.. just blows my mind.

That's a great story. Would be nice if they posted some of their stories online. Hopefully there's some good documentary on TV today I'll try to watch.
That's a huge sacrifice those vets made and the world sure would've been different had they not done so.

I still can't get over the stories he shared about the war and life associated with that time, and it has been almost a full day. I mean some of the stuff he shared was quite lighthearted and funny about his friends in bunkers and during travels...but the stories about the front lines...about seeing what he saw at such a young age that would certainly change anyone...

    I am just in awe...

I do have to add though...that he wasn't too impressed with my hitler stache that I am rocking for movember...My friend and I told him it was a charlie chaplin but still he didn't look too kindly upon it haha...nor of my ink but that's old folks for ya...

I agree, never forget the sacrafices of others so we could hae it easy.

I lost a cousin in afganistan a few years ago, still blows my mind, he would have been 29 this year.

Thanks to our vets and current soldiers.

The gratitude that we as Canadians owe to them can never be measured in just one day. The key is to always remember and honor them in any way we can.
