Default Need Help From Someone With Timing Light(1995 Integra)

Ive narrowed things down and i need to run a timing light on my car. After this its a compression test........

Does anyone have a spare evening this week to help me check/adjust my timing? Hopefully its an easy adjustment but i just dont own or know how to use a timing light.

1995 Integra RS, original engine 324,000km, plugs/wires/dizzy all changed within the past 6 months. Lotta other maintanence been addressed recently as well.

Why do you think your timing is off? Have you checked the physical timing first? ie. rotate crank to TDC and make sure marks on cam pulleys line up with the marks on the head ?

What are the symptoms, whats it doing wrong?

You said all this maintenance was done. Was the timing belt at least done? And a valve adjustment?

Only way the timing can end up off usually is by not putting the engine to TDC and the cam gears.

Yes, because it takes a special type know how to be able to work on Hondas. These Honda guys must be kinda special hey?

Wow all i said is that i did not want to waste anyones time and knew what i wanted to check next and that was run a timing light. Beyond is famous for lots of honda owners and ppl with honda experience so i figured my best bet was to ask for help from someone with that knowledge..........i will look elsewhere if nobody on here is capable of having a friendly conversation with me about a simple request to get assistence running a timing light on my car. im sure there is a few ppl who could spare 30mins to eat free pizza and possibly free beer to run a quick timing light. Im not an asshole, very down to earth kinda guy, but ive been known to miscommunicate at times.

To me it seems like a simple easy job to do but im not tech and i dont pretend to know anything overly detailed about how a vehicles drivetrain or suspension works.

    The miscommunication was here.

"I do not need everyone asking 20 questions as it only delays the ineviatble"

i took it as attitude, but if you didnt mean it that way, fair enough.

I read it as, "my car is giving me trouble, I don't know enough about the problem to diagnose it online and want help in person from someone more knowledgeable with the required tools."

Plus, the dude is having issues with his car, he's allowed to be a bit agitated at the whole thing. The frustration is evident, I figured that was what was goin on there.

Evan tried helping by asking "What are the symptoms, whats it doing wrong?" And was turned away. Would you walk into a shop and demand them to check the timing on your car right off the bat? You could, but they'd ask you the same questions as to what the symptoms were first. I don't tell aircraft mechanics to perform certain tasks before telling them the issues first. Why would someone try diagnosing a problem blindly? Every specialist works the same way.

The guy doesn't know enough about the problem to begin to describe it, he isn't the mechanically inclined type.

He didn't want to get into it because he couldn't

Well obviously, by "narrowing things down" as he has done so far, he should at least be able to give a symptom, even if hes not mechanically inclined.

All i wanted to know is what brought him to the conclusion that if its not timing, its a compression test. Is it down on power? Does it hesitate? stutter? idle shitty? backfire/missing? Thats it. Its fairly simple to deduce the problem from there.

I do, however, understand what its like to be frustrated with a car issue, so no harm done.

    good luck.

Missfire and backfire, no loss of power, idle seems good once it settles, the missfire is when i start it both hot or cold but also intermitten, overall engine function has been normal during driving minus the constant backfire which ive had to just live with, it has not affected drivability tho. To show someone they would have to ride with me and hear it.

Hmm, i see. Typically if timing is off, it will result in a loss of power. It would be a good idea to put a timing light on it JUST to make sure the base timing is set properly. Low compression will not typically cause a misfire....

If you are having anybody do it, maybe be sure the plugs are a. the correct heat rage recommended by the manufacturer, and b. that they are properly gapped to manufacturer specs (sometimes the gap is on the VECI sticker on the underside of the hood, as well as base timing number)

I cant see it being anything to do with the base timing, because if it was lets say, retarded, you would notice a loss in power and top end, and if it was advanced...it would most likely detonate and the ecu would go to the low octane map/knock map before anything happened. All of the timing is controlled by the ecu.

If it was a cheap chinese dizzy, i hear they use shitty ignitors in them. Maybe change it to a honda OEM ignitor and see if that makes the problem go away.

Another question, do you watch your fuel consumtion? If so, has it gotten worse?

Those are just some things you can look at, or have somebody look at, it may get you on the right track at any rate. Hope that helped you.

Likely the cheep ignitor is whats in there.......fuel consumption seems ok, a little less MPG during winter but otherwise 350-400km a tank pending driving habits that week and also pending how much idling ive done. NGK v-power is all i use, and i checked for a 0.044 gap, each plug.

Well, i guess check the timing with a light, but i doubt thats the issue, would be very suprised. If its good, i would change the ignitor to an oem honda ignitor. If wires are new, that rules out spark energy arcing to the block, unless somehow one was defective. You can try spraying a mist of water over the wires, boots, and dizzy, and see if anything arcs out. If not, i would really suspect ignitor. Just use a spray bottle.

You may even want to talk to shoaib at jdmsource, and see if he has any dizzys laying around that you could try. Most of what he has is genuine honda, from bad engines, or what not.
