Diwali or Deepawali (festival of lights) has significance in different religions. Here is a brief summary:

Jainism: The last of the Jain Tirthankar attained Nirvana or Moksh

Sikhism: Guru Hargobind Singh, the sixth guru, was released from prison. Also called Bandi Chhor Divas (Prisoner Release Day)

Arya Samaj: The celebration of the death anniversary of Rishi Nirvanotsav.

Buddhism: Newar Buddhists remember Emperor Ashoka who converted to Buddhism on Diwali

Hinduism: Celebrated as the "victory of good over evil" in respect to the light of higher knowledge and gain awareness of oneness.

    Source/more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diwali

I may have missed points so maybe somebody from the listed faiths may elaborate.

    But Happy Diwali!

I totally agree lol it's like "fuck I know how bad these are for me, but they taste so good!"

That applies to basically any of the sweets... Barfi, jalebi, gulab jamuns lol

    So put on your saris
    It’s time to celebrate Diwali
    Everybody looks so jolly
But it’s not Christmas, it’s Diwali
    The goddess of destruction, Kali
    Stopped by to celebrate Diwali
    Don’t invite any zombies
    To our celebration of Diwali
    Along came Polly
To have some fun at Diwali
If you’re Indian and you love to party
    Have a happy, happy
    Happy, happy Diwali!

Homie. I'm allergic to cashews and pistachios. Most sweets are a no go for me. Fresh Jalebi and Gulab Jamun are all I can safely eat.
