Question Someone cutting a cheque for transactions

    Scam?

What are your thoughts when using personal cheques on Kijiji or other transactions?

    story
Weird transaction today. I was selling a couple of new items through kijiji and finally met up with this woman at Starbucks.

In no way she appeared poor, drove a late Lexus IS350, jewellery and clothing up to the nine, etc.

Blah blah blah we talked about the items, then she proceeded to close the deal with $90 cash, then started cutting me a personal cheque for the rest of the balance (~$1,200 worth)

I told her she can just go to the ATM to withdraw or can just wait until she comes up with the cash. She said her bank is ATB and ATM are scarce in the city. She did insist that the cheque is legit and I politely told her that I cannot risk a cheque that could bounce.

She got all defensive and said there's other items similar to yours for sale (pretty much saying I will take my personal cheque elsewhere)

She did show me a few identification, but that does not guarantee she got cash in the bank to pay me.

Never ever. You had red flags, she can take a hike.

Even if she had cash, if you smell something weird, ALWAYS tell them you've changed your mind.

You aren't Costco. Cash for Kijiji transactions only.

Well imagine if instead of writing that letter to the editor, she just posts on a car forum for car enthusiasts. That's Kritafo.

Cash only. Every time. Or you go to the bank with them and watch them get a certified cheque

Well first of all tell her to go to a real bank, second who the f* uses cheques anymore? I pay my rent with one, but otherwise they're only good for direct deposit..

IMO you did the right thing. If she was sincere, she would understand why you would not want to risk taking a personal check.

    Yup.

If she tells me that, I'd tell her to give them that cheque and see if they'd be glad to accept it.

She drives a Lexus, dressed to the nines, supposedly has $1200 in the bank and yet doesn't want to spend $1.50 to use another bank's machine?

I've accepted a cheque before.. You gotta judge the person and go from there - it can go both ways.

I know in my case I'd come across as a huge d-bag to deny this guys cheque. Its definitely going overboard saying cheques, never though.
    - and this cheque was 1000ish too... Not the point.

That's when you offer $2 off the deal so she can go to the nearest ATM. If she refuses even that then scam.

Doesn't matter if someone drives a Civic or a Bentley, cash only.

if u already went to the bank with them...might as well tell them to withdraw the amount in cash, and skip the certified cheque

    personally, cash only
if they get defensive, either give them options (such as going to a bank to withdraw) or walk away.

She either worked hard for them, fleeced her ex-husband(s) or ripped off a bunch of suckers like you with personal cheques. Good call, there's many alternatives as already stated, it was totally a cashola scamola, brah!

Definitely sounds like a scam. Unless she was a 60 year old women or something. The only times I write a cheque now is to pay a speeding ticket. Why the fuck is there a $9 fee to pay it online

I'd rather walk around with one cheque rather than 10,000 in twenties.

She could be American. Cheques are still used as a primary form of payment in the US, believe it or not.

Of course, bouncing a cheque for over $100 on purpose in the US is a felony haha. Don't have those laws here.
