I was chatting with a buddy who has done a lot of work with FNs on and off the reserves. I was getting his impression on this movement and he compared it to the Occupy Movement, where there is a lack of a central leader and the core problem of the movement has become muffled. What is the core problem? From his understanding, it's the privatization of water on reserve land. In essence, rivers that flow through reserve land are not included in the reserve land and are now crown owned, where they can be sold to corporations such as Enbridge.

Now, I'm not one to usually question stuff like this from him because I know he knows he shit, both political issues and FN issues. But this was the first I'd heard of it and I tried looking more into it and I can't seem to find anything.

Other topics that came up were residential schools, and apparently the passed down hate and mistrust of Whitey surrounding them, and consequently public schools in general. Why can't FNs join the public schools instead of the schools on reserves that have issues with teachers staying longer than 6 months (a year+ is apparently a very long term)? Along with what I mentioned previously, transportation and effort from what I could gather. I guess Tsuu Tina has tried setting up a bus service but it's quite expensive.

I asked about bands paying themselves so much and the general mismanagement of money. He just looked at me and said, "we both already know the answer to that." Sometimes there are hundreds or even thousands of band members and getting one of these positions means that you have a decent income coming in, so again another reason not to be that motivated to go to school.

He and I differ on a few things because we're just in different positions and relations to FNs. For me, if everything was peachy-keen on reserves and stuff like this apparent privatization of water was the root problem of this movement, I'd be more sympathetic and supportive. But given the state of reserves and the lack of accountability (or apparent) for all this mismanagement of money, it's really hard to sympathize at all.

I'm not sure if you heard wrong but major rivers that flow through have always been crown land.

Look up Stoney 142, 143, 144 as an example.
