I'm not an expert, but it's my understanding that this specific claim by the Blood tribe had significant legal merit. Far more than some others that have been in the news in the last few years.
I thought there was an agreed upon settlement. Or was this ruling due to the govt fighting and appealing the earlier settlement. Not smart considering it will cost more in the long run.

Could just be mixed up on the reserves.. too many law suits to follow.

Another interesting lawsuit that got settled recently that discusses the Canadian charter of rights vs indigenous law. Courts ruled the Canadian charter does not supercede indigenous law.

As reluctant as I am I say this, the government should do a study to see what it would cost to wipe the slate and end this neverending payout and mangled situation they have themselves in. The government has botched a lot of shit, just get a final invoice and be done with it.

We're talking about issues >100 years old in some cases, this is not our generations problem to deal with.

    This.

Or just let the Americans invade us and wipe our federal government and everything it has ever signed or stood for away.

Yes scenario number 2 would be better.
You don’t need a study to determine any costs. It should cost nothing to wipe the slate clean, just stop fucking paying. As soon as you open the dialogue on a “one last payment” topic, you’ve already lost.

I'm afraid that the turd's already poking out of the butthole... there's no going back now without making a big mess.

I believe this is what was initially behind Hair Justin's "Truth" & Reconciliation policy.
Say sorry. Cry. Say sorry. Cut a cheque and get the fuck on with a unified society.

But he can't even manage to get potable water onto Indian Reserves. He's done so bad, he's lost the support of the Indigenous who he was championing.
    Amazing.

Which realistically, is exactly how it should be............................. On the reserve. Do whatever you want to govern, police, and take care of your people, live however you please, and receive zero compensation from federal tax revenues.

Would it solve anything if we did this? Or would we be back in court in 20 years with Aboriginals claiming their Elders didn't really understand the context of the agreements they were signing, so now they want us to honor some imaginary agreement they hypothesized that requires giving them a lot more money.

Why can't they fund their own clean water?

To be fair, they have increased potable water on several reserves.
