Default Stupid Shaw And Their Modems

I ordered NBA League Pass earlier this year and when I got it started, noticed I wasn't getting HD, nor was I getting HD on Netflix. Note, I access both through my Xbox.

I went to Shaw, who gave me a modem and a splitter so that I could use a hardline (don't know if that's the right term) without having to snake a network cord through the house. That was in early November.

Around Christmas time, the second modem stops working. I try resetting it a few times with no luck. Finally, I called tech support, and I get the following, in point form:
    - Can't run two modems in the house. Apparently, they start fighting over the connection
    - For the "low" price of $13 a month, I can get a second line installed

I think it's bullshit, and don't think a second line is worth the money. It seems rather expensive, and if I add it on to the cost of a Netflix subscription and an LP subscription, it makes both services unaffordable (cost > benefit).

I know this is more of a rant than anything else, but I just think it sucks and was looking for somewhere to vent. The reason I wanted the second modem was because I wasn't getting a strong enough wireless signal to my Xbox, and thus getting less than desirable video quality on Netflix, and lag on LP.

Interesting. Didn't know that. Still sucks for Netflix, but I guess I'll have to learn to deal with it.

Also, didn't realize I started this thread in the wrong section. Oops.

Do you have Netflix set for high resolution?

Nexflix defaults Canadian users to a lower resolution as a result of everyone being scared they would max out their download caps with their ISPs.

Also Shaw is not allowing access to the new netflix super hd. What a joke.

Yup. I get HD when I run the modem near my TV and use a LAN cable to connect the Xbox and modem. But the signal, I guess, is too shitty to do that over wireless.

I'll have to double-check, but I'm pretty sure both my router and my new Xbox wireless adapter uses the N standard, which as far as I know, is supposed to be the fastest, right? I'm barely computer literate, so I could be wrong in all things computers.

Try powerline networking. too many different Wireless networks and too many devices just drags throughput down unless you spend a few bucks on a quality wireless AP.

most wireless stuff is all advertised in theoretical maximums. You never get those when you start introducing all other kinds of wi-fi signals and devices not to mention other stuff. Powerline networking will at least provide sustained throughput and should be more reliable than wi-fi.

Powerline networking still rely's on good wiring so it's not perfect but worth a try.

Or spend even more money on the latest 802.11ac Wireless stuff..

I am running my Cisco router as an Access Point upstairs with the Shaw Modem/Router doing it's thing downstairs.

Alternatively you can set the Shaw Modem/Router to bridge mode and just use your regular router: https://community.shaw.ca/docs/DOC-1311

    Both are free to do.
