Canada could stand some non-leftwing biased media. Watching the news is god awful.

True. However, when people say "practice what you preach, capitalism at work, blah blah blah" technically they can't practice what they preach because of the system they are in. Especially considering some of the bullshitty channels some of the articles mentioned that are forced to be on basic cable subscriptions.Originally posted by btimbit

I am down with the fact they suck though. You should never have to yell (or really raise your voice) in a proper DEBATE. I just hate it that the liberal weenies get all upset when you counter their view. The CBSC or whatever its called didn't get 4500 complaints against the SUN because of the interview about interpretive dance, it got 4500 complaints because it was basically an organized complaint-fest.
I also also also find it funny of how people rag on Fox News delivery method. Yes, it can get a bit onerous, but it's interesting in the fact that liberal media news is typically very dull, calm, almost Prozac like. Nobody gets upset, all ideas are coddled and nurtured, nobody is told how ridiculous or stupid something is.
For cereal, if somebody tried to have a debate with me on whether housing should be subsidized (not even free, just subsidized) for ARTISTS, I'd probably go pretty god damn ballistic too!
When it comes to news, or ideas, one should look at substance over form and empirical evidence over ideology. Looking at outlets such as Fox and sun they trump the later over the former, which is what I think most of us are opposed to, not varied news sources. An outlet can be as right wing as they want, how they approach ideas and news is what matters, which should be in a way that that at least attempts to be objective and factual.Originally posted by HiTempguy1

Signed! Don't need their garbage in Canada
Just to point out, it's usually conservative "family-values" groups that file these complains, like the PTC in the US.Originally posted by HiTempguy1
Now, I'm not saying that they are (or are not) hypocrites, but seriously, Canada could stand some non-leftwing biased media. Watching the news is god awful.
Also, in other news:
"Earlier this month, the watchdog said Global Television must apologize to its viewers for not warning them about the bloody, drawn-out death of Bugs Bunny at the hands of Elmer Fudd during an episode of Family Guy. It wasn’t the violence that bothered the regulator, but the lack of warning."
WHAT? SERIOUSLY? It's FAMILY GUY for god's sake. People actually complain about this shit? (this was a year ago, but whatever).
That can't be real... are you serious? That would be like my parents writing letters because the Simpsons showed Itchy and Scratchy... *sigh*Originally posted by HiTempguy1

So you shouldn't yell in a debate...but Fox News is interesting because they yell in debates?
Seriously, you guys need to watch Sun News TV for a bit and you'll know it's basically a video extension of their "quality" newspaper.
I have it as part of my cable package (Channel 177) and having that channel for news as an alternative to Global/CBC/CTV will lower Canada's IQ.
If you want interesting, watch The Lang And O'Leary Exchange. You have a funny loudmouth and someone who speaks complete sense sitting together chatting about news.
+1 and Lang is easy on the eyes.Originally posted by Disoblige

If BBC and CBC are any indication, we need tax payer supported channels. I'm sick of programmings on for profit media, especially for news. For profit = catering to the lowest denomination of population.

The Sun has a TV show?
The only time I've ever noticed people reading the Sun was when I worked a summer as a labourer in construction.
I'm pretty sure that if you had a copy of The Sun on your desk at any serious office job in Calgary your coworkers would look down on you for that.
I'm all for a balanced media view, but the right wing tends to pander to the lowest common denominator, name calling and showmanship to get their message across. It's hard to argue for the existence of the Sun TV channel when they're calling the same group they're lobbying to stay on the air commies.
Agreed about the public broadcaster sentiments.Originally posted by Xtrema

PBS's documentaries, from political to scientific, make it my most favourite of US channels.
In truth, I am more of a centrist. I believe in making it on your own, but having been educated here, I believe it would have been harder for me to make it on my own had our school system not been heavily subsidized. Not wanting to be a hypocrite, there's now no way I can say "well fuck public support" with a straight face. I have not taken grants and subsidies directly (yet), but maaaan, any brief research and you'll find out all the educational institutions we have exist because of them, from K-H.S., SAIT, to Mt.Royal to the U of C.
As well, I believe in media balance. I don't necessarily mind the principle of mandatory carriage for certain channels. But SUN TV has centered its existence in lauding the free market, slamming public funding (being most against the CBC in particular), and, just as they have directly said here ( CLICK ), will not take public money.
Well, let them answer to their own rules, I say.

I say just let Sun News fail and then to show their balance by hiring a former right-wing network newscaster and how they're with it with social networking, the CBC can hire Gina Phillips
