If your passport is about to expire and it's too close of a margin, I'd suggest getting an emergency renewal.
No need for the six months. I've been into the USA with less than that. However, I wouldn't travel with less than 1 month "cushion" on the expiry. What if you end up in hospital or are delayed for another reason?
Emergency renewals can be done very quickly.

Canada is part of the 6 month club, so travelling to the US you don't need to adhere to the 6 month rule.
