Default $%#&! I dropped an iPhone in the water.

So I just dropped the wife's iPhone 4 in about an inch of water (bottom of a drinking glass). I powered it down in about 5 seconds after and had it in a bag of rice within a minute or two. Any chance on this thing coming back to life? Online research tells me anywhere from one to three days MAY do the trick.

Should have applied this to it. It would be protected forever.

But on a better note it may come back or it may not. fact is your warrenty is void because of the sensors built into the device. looks down the headphone port for a pink marker.

U were able to power it down meaning it was on after u took it out of the water which means odds are good

If its iPhone 4 not 4s then warranty is done anyways I believe?

Seal the bag of rice and wait until tmr and try it out
Not every exposure to water will kill a phone (which is why they always check the water damage markers before providing warranty service since it could have fallen in water but not caused a short).

I dropped my iPhone in a bucket of grout water. Went completely under, had to fish for it, maybe 3 or 4 seconds. Speakers had no sound, couldn't make a call. I just let it dry normally and it's still working to this day (2 years later).

Put an ipod shuffle through the wash once. Dried it out for two days and it worked good as new.

(Not quite the same complexity as an iphone, mind you....)

Dump it in rubbing alcohol not rice (hydrophobic + dilutes contaminants; also dries an arseload faster than water)

Pull the battery then a 5 min soak... then a few hours to dry...

shouldn't you of all people have insurance for this?

Get a plate of distilled water (no minerals to foul electrical circuits) soak the phone in that over night (w/o battery).

Then, take the phone and put in a warm (grill is ok to touch) oven and leave it for a few hours.

You may have to reheat the oven a few times if it cools down too fast.

Did this to my Nokia phone years ago after it fell into a slush/mud puddle in the spring and it worked fine.

The idea is to remove all internal contaminants from the PCBs and then remove all moisture from the device as fast as possible to avoid corrosion.

Yes the rice method does indeed work.

I had mine fall into a completely full bathtub and submerged for about 1-1.5 seconds. I powered it off, dried it out with a towel, left it for a couple hours and it works great.

Everyone saying take out the battery it's an iPhone lol
Rubbing alcohol would dilute any water and when it dries it would not leave any trace elements that could conduct electricity and short it out but who has a shitload of running alcohol just sitting there

A sealed bag of rice will literally pull the moisture from the phone and air so it's ur best bet

Like I said if it was on and u powered it off urself the water probably didn't get to the circuits and cause damage otherwise it would have turned off on its own.

Google if u guys don't believe the bag of rice trick lol

Alcohol is easily found. Look for 99% at the drug store, and it seems fucked, but submerge the phone in a container of it. Let it soak so the alcohol can dilute the water. Then, bring it out and air dry for about 24 hours and it'll be good as new.

99% alcohol is critical. Don't use the 70% stuff. Shoppers sells 99% for like $2.99

    Science fail.

Rubbing alcohol is not hydrophobic, it's actually very soluble in water.

It is hygroscopic though, meaning that it will do a good job absorbing water.

I would not recommend immersing your phone in alcohol. that would work for something like lab glassware, but with something like a phone I would be afraid of the alcohol degrading adhesives, plastics, and sensitive shit inside the phone. I would just blow a fan on it for a couple of days (not sure I buy the rice immersion technique as that seems to me to increase boundary layer resitsance. do you have a food dehydrator or a drying oven by any chance (?)
