I dunno. I got to the zoo regularly, but the elephants don't seem to be a big draw. I'm sure the elephants are some of the most expensive creatures to maintain too.

The news is about a year old at this point, and we'll have to wait until 2018 before they show up. CBC News

There are some who say that this panda deal is one of the main reasons they are getting rid of the elephants. The island is pretty full, and putting the pandas in the elephant enclosure would be a natural fit.

There are others who say we're only getting the pandas because the Harper government has been so friendly to Chinese business deals lately. wiki - Panda Diplomacy

I see them saying "There are alternatives" but they don't actually list any. What are the alternatives?

We go to the zoo multiple times a year and the only time we really enjoyed the elephants was when a female was super horny and kept presenting herself in front of a male. She even backed right into him. He was totally uninterested. I don't blame him, bitch musta been 5,000 pounds.

I like the elephants, but the animals need to be taken care of. The current enclosure is too small, and as already stated, that petition says nothing about what the "other options" are.

The zoo doesn't just get rid of animals without doing a lot of thinking about it. This is a 5-year plan, it's not like someone just woke up and thought "hey, I'm tired of the elephant, get rid of them tomorrow!".

PLus, it's not like massive construction to enlarge their enclosure (at the cost of probably sacrificing the future panda exhibit) would be very pleasant.

They've had their time, let them be shared with other visitors at another zoo with a larger enclosure, and bring in some fresh animals for the kids to see here.

I like the Elephants too, but our enclosure is the smallest, shittiest, zoo enclosure I've ever seen relative to the size of the animal in a developed country. Personally I'd like to see them relocated. When they aren't outside in their tiny pen, they are inside on the small, boring, concrete-floor exhibit. Also I've never felt like they were a big draw, we could get some cooler stuff in that space I bet.

I've been to other zoos where the Elephant exhibits were absolutely massive, had separate ponds, little rivers, etc.

What I really want to see at our zoo is way more deadly/exotic stuff haha. As it is, the biggest part of the zoo is full of stuff nobody cares about, like moose, buffalo, goats, etc.

Yah they went to the geographic layout which sucks. The reptile house used to be the best - all sorts of snakes and spiders and things with fangs. Now there's 2 tiny crocs that don't even look real and a bunch of constrictors that don't move. Bring me cobras and mambas and rattlesnakes and funnelweb spiders! Bring on the hebejeebees.

Tigers are good but they keep the north side of the pen closed off more than it's open. Penguin exhibit is really well done.
That's not sweat. It's your fat, crying.

We need to think about the animals. People are being greedy, but it sounds like they need a better place to live.

You guys want to see shitty ? Google Lucy the elephant from the zoo in Edmonton. Every time I see or hear about her I just want to put a bullet in between her eyes to put her out of her misery.
