Yep, they fucked up so you can fix it.

I got a 200 million surplus by cutting everything seniors get, government, putting back healthcare user fees and increasing corporate tax.

Ended up with a 1.8B surplus. Jacked up Corporate tax to 11% and personal from 10 to 11%. Didn't cut education or seniors, did cut some of the non-essentials that could be re-initiated in a surplus situation.

    It's a scam.

The only way to get any meaningful surplus is to add PST.

Big time scam. The "cuts" they let you make are like 2-10% of the program for anything meaningful. Makes it look like the only way to get a surplus is to raise taxes.

BTW, at least they let you kill the Sheriff department.

Guess we can speed anywhere there isn't enough RCMP coverage?

How come there is no, Cut MLA's salaries to what amounts to minimum wage and make them contribute to their own pensions instead of putting it on the tax payers backs, option?

Or how about a, if you want to go to the Olympics buy your own damn ticket, option?

For those saying this is a scam, what is missing from here that you can make additional cuts on? I'm genuinely curious

Because then any even slightly intelligent MLA won't want the job and the only ones wanting it would be those willing to work for minimum wage. I'm not gonna say our MLAs are great, but lower salaries just mean lower caliber of employee.

when I did it a while ago I cut the crap out of seniors programs, and a bunch of other things, upped both taxes to 11%, couple other things...got a surplus. But yes, this whole thing was definitely designed to soften people up to the idea of tax increases.

without increasing taxes, adding a PST or crap like that, I ended up with a 1.1B surplus.

Because there doesn't need to be one.
EDIT: I should clarify this: it is because it isn't a provincial funding matter, but a federal one.

First and foremost they need to stop bleeding money, then start manning up and making cuts. I would start putting money into the heritage fund then live off the intrest/investments down the road. More revenue won't help fix the problem, because they just spend all the money coming in, plus some. I feel like we live in Greece lately, wtf. It's almost like oil money is Alberta's equivalent of treaty money.

I honestly went through it as best I could, I cut a few things that I felt were non-essential and added the income tax above 250k.

I ended up with a 300 mil surplus without a whole ton of trouble.

    I R GENIUS

My budget resulted in a 0.9 Billion surplus by cutting retarded things, leaving Health Care and Seniors alone and cutting massively from post-secondary grants and primary/secondary administration and like spikers, without a PST.

Our government is so irresponsible it is crazy. What people need to realize is that in the time of a deficit you need to be harsh. You need to do everything possible to reduce spending, not rely on increased taxes. I just did this and got a 1.5B surplus pretty easily. Below we're my comments going through.

    1. Cut the budget to make websites to talk about budgets. That's probably someone salary for a year.
    2. Where does it talk about completely cutting government officials expense accounts other than for necessities?
    3. Reduce post secondary funding. I am sure they can live with a 3% cut and lay off some useless profs.
    4. Payments to farmers? Are you fking kidding me? All the farmers I know are laughing straight to the bank and they get diesel fuel cheaper and direct payments?
    5. Arts and culture? Seriously? How irresponsible is our government in a deficit to fund these programs.
    6. Class sizes from K-12 are complete bs. Smart people are smart, dumb people are dumb. 5 more students in class will not change this.
    7. Health care? Make people start paying a bit.
    8. Disabled? Cut funding.
    9. Seniors? You had 65 years to set yourself up for retirement. It is not my fault you didn't make it work. If i am 65 and need to rely on the government for $$ i will be severly dissapointed in myself. Cut funding.
    10. AB tourism? I've met the people who run this, complete joke and waste of $$.
    11. Increase fuel tax? Sure. Increase personal and corporate? Get boned.
    12. Sales tax? Get boned.
