Default Sweetgrass Montana runs. any interest?

OK, Talked it over with El Presidente, and we decided this could be fun to do a roadtrip every so often.

Soo, would you all be interested in a service like this? Cost to people would be our costs. Baygirl and I can self clear items for you.

We will be using our truck and if needed, trailer, so we can bring back most anything.

Obviously there is going to be a required trust level as we will be bringing items across the border. If you choose to use this service, you realize we will most likely be opening your packages to make sure we are not doing something illegal. If you don't want us opening things up, we probably are not going to be helping you, unless we know you well.

So, how many of you would be interested in doing this, if we were to set up runs say once a month or every 6 weeks or so?

answer the poll, and feel free to post any comments.

Your costs need to include mileage and wear/tear or you're nuts! Federal Gov't mileage rates per km would be a minimum I would say.

At federal mileage rates, it becomes a losing proposal. No one is going to pay $300 for them to go to Sweetgrass and back.

Well, i think the idea would be for several items/people at once?

Maybe mileage/depreciation /wear and tear aren't a concern, it was just my thoughts.

I think flat rate would work, like $20 a package. Load 20+ packages in a truck and you'll be making $300 or more on a load.

I've done this a few times for beyonders, and the biggest issue I had was people cancelling the run either because they weren't patient enough for a decent sized pick up, or they just had things shipped direct anyway.

USBPS/CBPS will quickly take note of your frequent crossings as well, wich may result in frequent hard secondaries, and veh searches.

Honestly ferrying parcels over the border is a nice gesture, but crossing back and forth is
Not something to be taken lightly. Even with a nexus pass, unless you are a known business who does daily border crossing the Us and Can side may make your life very difficult.

That being said though, I would love to use yoir services lol :-)

nah, but if we do a trip for 6 or 7 people, the cost per person is considerably less. and for some, importing a larger item, it may just be worth it.

As for the searches, I have no problem with that, we won't be transporting anything illegal or questionable across.

Additionally, doing it every 5-6+ weeks should not be an issue.

I'm not sure if you've ever seen them fully search someones vehicle at the border, but they completely take everything apart (door panels, dash parts, etc) and then you're expected to put it all back together.

I don't think there'd be demand for this as often as every 5-6 weeks. Maybe three times a year?

Still, cool proposal, and if you end up doing this, I'm sure I'll be making use of it. My wife is always trying to buy things from amazon.com that they won't ship to Canada.

Hell, Monoprice alone would be getting a couple orders a year from me.

^^Yeah, I am thinking of declaring dates well in advance of when the next trip would be. Like right now, I am thinking of maybe late May or early June for the first run.

Not trying to rain on your parade but I looked into doing this before and there is one catch - If you accept any payment of any kind you are now technically a commercial importer, and the process (and fees) are very different from importing things for your personal use. That applies if you so much as collect gas money from the person you are bringing the item back for. Just watch out for yourself.

I'll be importing a motorcycle in the next month or so, I'd be interested in going down with you to pick it up.

This is true. I am in great falls right now, and asked when i came down. This is 100% true.

Would definitely be very interested in this. Can get tires down there for ridiculously cheap (I'm talking Achilles atr sports in 265/35/18 for under $100ea)

If you're going down there in the next month or so, send me a PM when you find out

If you take anything I have to say seriously, you're gunna have a bad time.

Just got off the phone with Border services, and while you guys are technically right, it is not something they are worried about.

The lady I spoke to said that while that is technically true, it is to stop people from doing this 3 times a week and making a profit on it.

I specifically mentioned how I would be doing this, and accepting money for gas, and her words were just to leave it out of the consent letter you will need to import things on their behalf, and if I am doing this once every couple of months, it is not a problem.

She also said to make it clear to anyone I bring a package back for that I will be opening them.

So, having said all that, and checking out the legalities, and that the poll says 75% of you like this idea, I am pretty comfortable in doing this.

Stay tuned for a thread later on detailing how I will be running this.
