I'd be worried. I dont really trust ford's motivations for "fixing" things. Like the "fix" for the coyote oil consumption issues which is just reprogramming the ecu and putting in a longer dipstick...

Tap, Rack, BANG!
I thought the “fix” was 24mo leases?

What you ecoboosters getting for gas mileage while towing? Say a 4500 lb trailer or so? I know i asked this before.. but 174 pages..
At 95 km/h I get 22.4 pulling my ~7000 lb trailer. At 110 it's a lot worse.
Although I'm driving slow for other reasons these days. Fucking shitty trailer.

Generally speaking flat towing a 3000lb car I find the 3.5 will average around 16L/100km at highway speed. Keep in mind the drag isn’t anywhere near a trailer though.
Aero drag is the main factor for sure.
Having towed with a lot of engines, and three travel trailers, honestly you end up using about the same fuel either way. The Ecoboost is marginally better at slow speeds. But the real draw of that engine is the low Rpm torque and drama free driving manners. Same benefit as the big diesel engines in the one tons. Low stress low drama. I wouldn't own another engine in a half ton.

Towed at 26’ jayco with a 2018 3.5 (28-30l/100) and will be towing a 26’ rented trailer with my 2020 2.7. Expecting 30l/100. These engines are terrible for towing mileage. Awful.

The difference in mileage from 100 to 120 in my Sierra was dramatic. Laden or unladen.

Huh… not as good as I thought (taco is doing like 21-28 pending wind), but at least a proper tank size so I’m not scared of going empty. But probably a lot better manners while towing
An under compressed 3.5 or 2.7 has nothing unless it’s in boost. And, when in boost the A/F is richer than a compatible NA setup. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
Ford also strongly suggests premium when towing too. Lol.
Can tow - not ideal MPG. Ford engines shine as a grocery getters.

still really flip flopping on the Heavy Duty Payload Package as it really could tie into the perfect camping setup of a truck camper that tows a boat... plus a daily driver that isnt a super duty
here are a few points of reference for towing with a 3.5L and what to expect. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
All data points are towing about 6,500 LBS at about 100kms/h
My 2012 with the 3.13 rear end got 28l / 100km
my 2016 with the 3.55 rear end got about 23L/100kms
my 2019 gets about 21L/100kms with the 3.73 rear end.
I wouldn't try that with a 1/2 ton at all. At best, you are gonna get like 3000lbs of payload with an absolute base level truck, and unless you are buying a really light and basic slide in camper, you are going to be in for a bad time, both safety and ride quality wise. This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. If that is your end goal to have a slide in and tow, you would be 1000x better off with a 3/4 or 1 ton.

Yeah I thought you needed at least a 3/4 for a truck camper these days?
Another issue I’ve run into with the 3.5 is overheating when towing. Have had two now get extremely hot flat towing our 3000lb car, one was a 19 on Stoney with cruise set to 108 last week and then a 18 doing 110 last summer in high 20s ambient temp. The 18 hit 127° water temp climbing a hill out of the Red Deer river valley on cruise and the 19 hit 116 degrees water temp climbing from 16th ave to Beacon Hill last week.
If you're only pulling 4500 lbs, the 5.0 might be a good option.

There's a few pretty light campers out there.. with the HDPP, you're around ~2650 for payload with the supercrew 4x4
main issue is the lack of full size travel fridge. I dont understand why the hell I'd ever need a microwave..

'17 3.5L w/ 3.55 rear and ~5500lb cruise set at 115kph I get around 25 to 27L/100km.This quote is hidden because you are ignoring this member. Show Quote
I guess thats biggest difference. I'm getting 21-27 doing 100 k/hr. If I push to 110 im prob doing ~27-30. That being said my Roo is a frigging sail
