Good call I think hard cover is way to go. Whats everyone's thoughts on toolbox vs tonneau? Is the 5.5' bed useable at all with a toolbox in there?

Hard is definitely better. But not the cheapest option.

Hard to say on the effect of the toolbox, couldn’t tell you what you plan on hauling in there.

I didn't bother with a bed mounted tool box. I have had a hard cover on all my truck boxes after someone took a knife to the first soft one I had. Since I have had the hard cover, zero issues. That's not to say it won't stop a determined thief, but it keeps the casual ones out.

As for a tool box, I just strap one of my big roll arounds down in the box, and that has worked for the past 9 years with my trucks.

The bed mounted tool box actually intrudes quite a bit, and the 5.5 box is small enough already. with the hard covers, when you need the full bed, they can flip up and rest on padding against the cab, and you only lose a few inches versus like 18" with the tool box.

That and the hard tonneau is all of 5 minutes to remove if you really need those 3 inches.

I convinced the wife we'll deal with it later *IF* we actually use this thing for camping and we need it.

Camping has lost all it's appeal with little kids, IMHO. Zero actual relaxation, but it seems about the only vacations I'm gonna get this year, lol.

Hah, with babies and toddlers that true, but past that camping with kids can be amazing as long as you don't mind them getting some bumps and bruises. Kids will scrabble around the forest for hours if you keep them fuelled up with juice boxes and unhealthy snacks.

Keep yourself fuelled with dozens of $1 beers and unhealthy snacks too.

Alright truck bros. I know it was posted in this thread somewhere but what is a decent "tonto" cover as my wife would call it for the 5.5' box. Im not cheap. Also, I want the literal cheapest tonto cover for this thing that is useable. Lol.
If you're just looking for something to keep rain and snow out of your box, get the cheap soft guys from like Princess Auto or something, ours cost us like $250 and was good enough. We didn't keep anything in the box worth stealing though and when it's that cheap you don't really GAF if someone slashes it to check inside.

The hard lockable ones are super useful and will keep out opportunists and something like the Truxedo you can defo feel the build quality in them - @tirebob will get beyonders a deal on anything the suppliers carry ;-)

My favourite one is the OEM Ford hard but roll-able one, my F-I-L has it on his Limited and it's shit hot. Unslashable, locks with the tailgate and literally takes 5 seconds to roll up if you need the box

Absolutely... I personally have one of the hard BakFlip covers and it does a great job for me, and as it folds right back against the cab I like being able to put something taller than the box and strap it right up against the cab side with no interference.

I'd like a hard cover but the cost scares me, especially since it's going on a lease. Looking on kijiji, either there's no market for used tonneau covers or they're an extremely hot commodity, anyone know which?

No market, people just sell the truck with them attached

You can sometimes get a cap cheaper cos they need painted and people hate that shit

What's the dealer quoting on them?

I may or may not be with a Ford store - *not soliciting*
But - will edit this post with a list for a group buy if anyone is interested in a hard-top tri-fold tonneau?

There's a plenty strong market for used hard-fold tonneaus. They sell quick usually. I'd advise trying to buy one used as you could likely re-sell for most of what you pay for it.

Having done the hard-roll-up style, they are most convenient but also do impinge upon available bed space to a degree. I'm on a tri-fold at the moment and it's been great.

Didn't get a proper quote, but it was in the $1k-1500 range for a hard folding one.

Trying to buy a used one, but noticed they seem to be very few and far in between.

My experience - the hard roll up ones, like the BakFlip Revolver do not work so well in winter. Mine froze, and would not roll.
I went back to a tri-fold, which I've had on 3 trucks now. Mine is a lease also, and I just got them to throw on the Ford Factory cover (rebranded bakflip) and roll in price with the lease...whatever.

Just heard an advertisement on the radio for Woodridge.

They dropped it to $239/bw and still $1000 down.

FWIW, it’s really not that tough to negotiate an installed tonneau into your deal. Those things are high profit for the dealer.

I was able to get a hard tonneau rolled into my deal even with invoice pricing on my gmc.
