Technically you can do it any time of year, but late April is probably the earliest I'd do it personally. By then most of the frost should be out of the ground and you'd be able to create a fairly flat and even surface.

Can you even buy sod right now? I'm not sure how green any of the local sod farms down south are right now.

Brown sod is usually dry, it doesn't really unroll it kinda crumbles mostly. If you can get it down (green) I wouldn't really worry about it now, just make sure it gets water in weeks like this.

honestly, I would not do it until late May. Any grass you get now is still going to be in a hibernated state, and thus not ready to start putting roots down, and with overnight temps still going into the negatives, you risk freezing everything in a vulnerable state.

I would be waiting until night time lows stay above 4 degrees.

You don't wanna sod on mud, you gotta be damaged near perfect to make it look good. Wait till it dries, just park an old beat up car on your lawn, nobody will notice the hole.

I trying to decide between sod vs seed.

I have 600 sq ft front lawn with nothing but dirt.

What ever option, I want low maintenance..

Anyone tell me the cost/benefits of sod vs seed and recommend a supplier.

    Thanks

How big is the hole? Plant a tree and throw 15 bucks of mulch around it, and if you don't sell by may move the tree and sod. I guess it depends where in your yard it is, but people like tree. Haha.

Any sod you put down now isn't going to look much better than a mud hole after a week or two IMO. I would be waiting until mid to late May before trying to fix it proper.

For what sod costs though, maybe you want to lay something down temporarily now, and plan on pulling it up in a couple months if it doesn't take.

Try lying some black landscaping fabric over top - get some better solar heating going down and let the water evaporate...

We used to do patches in spring by laying seed then putting a sheet over top - could get relatively quick germination rates that way; but it would still standout as a patch - what about digging a new 10x14 bed in the back for some insta-sod?
