Wouldn't these tickets be really easy to beat in court anyways? A plane going by or you were yelling at your girlfriend for getting fat?

Instead of the using them in the latest gen Caravan, the noise snare should be in a 3rd Generation VW Jetta, right in front of the Ship & Anchor.

Could Rick Bell please hire a fourth grader to ghost-write his articles for him? That's the most confusing peice of gibberish I've ever seen.

    the plot thickens

CALGARY- The company helping crack down on noise violations says they are parting ways with the city, over a disagreement about how noise is measured.

Street Noise Reduction Systems (SNR) has provided the equipment for Bylaw’s Noise Snare operations, which were introduced just a couple of years ago. The device measures the decibel level of vehicles, and those caught exceeding 96 decibels could get a $270 ticket.

However, SNR Systems says the wording of the bylaw is hindering the program’s success—since it does not specify distance.

“It is likely possible to measure a sound level of 96 dB from a hybrid vehicle if the measurement is taken close enough, yet it is also possible that the most heavily modified motorcycle sporting straight pipes can yield a reading of less than 50 dB if it passes a block away,” the company says in a statement. “The obvious problem is that no one alive would reasonably consider the hybrid vehicle to be objectionably loud.”

SNR Systems says it has repeatedly asked Animal and Bylaw Services to address council with concerns about the wording or to arrange a meeting, but that has still not happened.

“Without the distance specification, the present wording of the noise bylaw is completely incompatible with the operation of the Noise Snare.”

SNR Systems says it is ceasing operations with the city in two months.

Bylaw officials say noise complaints are one of the most frequent calls they receive, and 347 excessive vehicle noise complaints were filed in 2012.

There was more than a few of us that called it, this program was destined to get scrapped from the beginning. Colossal failure. I'd love to have an actual number, all in, testing phase, implementation, enforcement etc of what this cost The City.

I think you're missreading the article...nowhere does it say the city is abandoning it...it says the company is abandoning their support of the cities project...I'd be willing to bet the city will still proceed doing exactly what they're doing.

It was only revenue they had in mind, but now they're really pissed.

Come to a rolling stop? The fine is now a 1 month mortgage / rent payment for you POS criminals.

EDIT: I don't mean that obnoxiously loud vehicles aren't driven by low self esteem POS, because they are.

Didn't misread it. Just got ahead of myself. I think ultimately the project gets scrapped. This is a big step in that direction. Without the manufacturers backing, and based on the manufacturers comments about distance being the issue, I see no way possible a ticket holds up if challenged.

We wrote detailed articles about it a year ago (thanks to all the beyonders that contributed). We wrote to all the aldermen and the mayor only to get brushed aside with a template letter thanking us for the letter. Nenshi ignored all the tweets, saying that there's many (useless) tests to validate the device, then just ignored all noise snare tweets period when he had no answers.

It's interesting though, SNR ignored our questions regarding distance measurements because I didn't believe that their device measured distance at all, and now they're calling the city out for not having distance in the bylaw. Their initial stance was that the vehicles weren't hidden, and now this. I wonder if the 1 ticket was from a hybrid or something measured too close, and that's why it was thrown out.

SNR is the only company making this device, so them backing out means the project is toast. The original thread talked about how tough it actually is to objectionably measure and identify which vehicle it's coming from. Accuracy was questionable too, as sounds echo easily off buildings increasing the measurements.

If the company is not working w/ the City anymore then chances are they either want their free sampler device back or the City to pay the $400k or whatever its retarded cost is in order to keep it?

Yeah, I was having a great debate with Nenshi about it over twitter, and then when he didn't have a proper rebuttal to me, I got the white wash comment of "It will all work out in the end."

Tell me Nenshi, is this how it was supposed to work out in the end?

The noise snare trap might be toast, but that doesn't mean the CPS isn't going to have decibel meters in their trunks, sticking it up people's tailpipes.
